    Since you mention 'payback'...

So when does SONY receive their kharmic retribution for their decision to secretly install copy protection software in the computers of those that supported them by purchasing their music CD's?

I think I should be able to make a copy of a CD to use in my car where it can easily be damaged and safely store the original at home (which I have done with all of my CD's). SONY felt otherwise and I choose not to support their underhanded tactics.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Sony_BMG_CD_copy_protection_scandal

I have not bought a SONY product since and don't see myself doing so in the near future if I can possibly avoid it. If they had been upfront about doing it, I may not feel so strongly about boycotting their products now, but it was more that they did so secretly that influenced my decision. SONY can dry up and blow away for all I care. JMHO and YOMV.

600k units were sold in the US total of 1million HD DVD units sold worldwide so the impact isnt that great relatively speaking. You'll now see a sharp ramp up in HiDef player sale as price should fall due to economy of scale and competition.

I love it the HD-DVD war is over now Sony is going after the VOD and online download (iTunes) companies.

    Its never over...

Price cuts were to draw loyalty. Now that the competition is dead prices will rise. Once everyone is on-board the churn should lower the price again but the time to buy was last Xmas.

I would wait a year for the features and technology to get better for the price.

Does anyone have an opinon on upscaling to HD DVD players? Its seems as if there's a lot of standard def DVD players on the market claiming near-HD upscaling.

I got a cheapo Phillips at Costco that upscales very well. It comes with a free HDMI, and it's hackable to all regions and pal.

I have a Panasonic (DMR-ES46V - same as the DMR-ES45V, but packaged for Costco with a free HDMI cable) that upscales from both DVD and even VHS and does so quite well IMO. Definitely a noticeable improvement to both formats.

I also got mine from Costco.

I think I'm going to buy a PS3 today. Anyone use one as their primary BlueRay/DVD player? I also want the PS3 for Rock Band! :)

:) Damn!!! Yeah I am wireless at home too.

There's a "pack" at costco where you get the 40GB PS3, extra controller, BlueRay remote control, Spider-Man 3 Blue Ray movie, and Ratchet & Clank Future game, for $515. I could do without Spider-Man 3, which I thought sucked, but it would do well to show off the player.

Maybe I should just get the PS3 by itself, and the DVD remote. I don't want that game either, I'd rather it came with GT5 Prologue or whatever it's called.

Don't convert your whole library just yet......wait 3 years and the format will most likely have changed once again......will DVD's go the way that the hard drive is heading? I.E flash memory? Propbably, IMO. Moving parts, spinning motors, etc. to transfer data will no doubt be obsolete in the near future. I still have a few laser discs and VHS tapes left - and I'm not budging - antiques in the making!
