well.......if your wheel is tensioned properly there should be little to no flex there...besides if you can't tell the difference between the flex in the fork and the wheel.......then you prolly won't benefit from this conversion.;)

Total newb on this, but would love to stiffen the front end (and rear) up and wanted to know how to go about the DT Swiss RWS conversion.

I have standard Salsa flips on both ends, Fox TALAS RCL 08/Chris King disc (F) and Chris King disc (r). Do I need to buy a conversion kit or will these simply fit with the King hubs?:-k

I have a Fox F120 and recently converted to a 9mil RWS skewer. I have cheap no name hubs and just drilled them out. It was definately stiffer and worth every penny as the skewers are not cheap. I dont know if this is good or bad, but there was definately more feedback coming through the bars. It was almost like I could feel every small bumb. I did not have that feeling with the regular QR.

I guess where I really notice it is riding through rock gardens and boulders how the front wheel feels kind of sloppy or lacking a "crispness" to my handle bar turning input. Other times, say riding down the apex of a boulder, the front end has a wandering to the side feeling, like it won't stick the line I'm giving handlebar input for it to do. Really messes with my confidence and commitment when it has a mind of it's own.

so I kinda want to convert the front of my trailbike to RWS, but it'll take some doing.

basically, it's a DT onyx hub, so DT doesn't have a conversion kit for it. iirc from my exploratory hub surgery, I'd just need to get a new axle machined (so that the TA rides on bearings, not end caps)

    :-k

If it uses cartridge bearings, maybe. If it is a cup and cone bearing, then a nutted axle is your only option.

    chewteti,
I just finished drilling out some whtie industries end caps. Everything is fine, except that I couldn't get the drill bit exactly centered and stay exactly centered. The holes may be .01" off center. I mounted the wheel to the fork and it feels fine. I made sure the off center were both facing up when I mounted the wheel.

    My question.
How did you get the hole exactly centered? I used a drill press, but somehow the drill bit seemed to wander just a bit. Oh yeah, I also did check for squareness of the table to the bit everything was fine.

thanks for any help you can offer,.

I was lazy, and also used a drill press. (to do it gnats ass perfect, i shoulda used a lathe).

To center it, i used a drill bit of the EXACT diameter of the qr skewer hole. Chucked it into the drill, and had the hub cap in a clamp/vice and perfectly flat. I adjusted the location of the vice until the drill press would line up perfect with the hub end cap. (verify by lowering the drill bit until it will go into the skewer hole)

Sounds like what I did. I must not have had something squared up, since both caps seemed to be off the same. Luckily I have an extra set.
    thanks

eh, there are ways to get it perfectly center on a drill press, it's just a pain.

personally, if I had them, I would use a set of reamers. that would remove just a little material at a time though, and you'd need like 10 reamer sizes for that job.

you might be able to replicate that with several drill bits, it's just bad for the bits. start with a small one that's just bigger than the hole, drill out, ensure centeredness, move up to the next size drill bit (as small of a size increase as possible)

Well I reset my mcgyvered clamp and made another run. Victory. They seem perfect, at least to the eye and they fit tight on the bolt.

    thanks for the advice
