oh sweet! ill check that out!

i know in mytrack, you can load tracks (gpx files from gl) but can u navigate with it, like guide you which direction to head, waypoints, etc? ive never used a gps to navigate on trails...just to record my ride.

I would like to use the gps also to navigate with gpx files but I would assume you would need to have the phone clamped to something like the handlebars. I would hate to crash with the phone out. I'm hoping someone designs a hard case like one I have seen for the iphone.

Trimble lets you download your route to your SD card so you can have maps saved in case you are out of mobile range as well. You can also upload a gpx file or download your trip as a gpx. My Tracks allows you to download as a gpx or kml. The one thing Trimble has on My Tracks is that you don't have to have mobile coverage since you can download trips to your SD card. On the other hand My Tracks is free and Trimble is not.

There are quite a few phone holders out there but if you take a spill your phone might not survive too well. Be sure to get a rubberized case as well so if you take a fall the phone doesn't die.

i bought a case for my droid from the verizon store. i like it. its nice. its a satin/rubber like finish and is pretty compact. would it survive a crash? probably not. i keep my droid in my back shirt pocket. i would be worried about crashing with my droid strapped to my handle bars too. lol

ill prob use my old garmin vista. i just need to buy the data cable.

Learned a little something interesting as a possible solution (for those of me that have to have everything). iPod Touch (90% of iPod functionality) with Skype and a Verizon MiFi.

I'm 95% sure I'm dumping AT&T for the iPod Touch/Droid/MiFi combo shot. And for some reason the price for Verizon service is about $80/mo less (still have to verify this as it sounds wrong to me).

Anyone want a 16 month old iPhone for a good deal?

interesting idea. by "ipod touch/droid/mifi combo" ? you will either get ipod touch/mifi or droid/mifi?

if you get the droid u have to subscribe to the data plan ($29) for the droid. one downfall of skype right now on th droid is that u cannot call skype to skype.

for mifi, i only see a max of 5gb/month at $59...kinda pricey.

Ive had my droid for a couple weeks and love it. Its so customizable, like a little computer more than a phone. Droidforums.net is a good place to get info.

Here is my list of great (free) apps.

    GPS:
    Stock google nav - amazing
My Tracks - gps for recording your rides and gives stats such as speed, elevation, etc.

    Communication:
Google voice- awesome service, and it integrates really well with android. Gives you visual voicemail, and transcribes it (although its accuracy isnt so great)
Handcent - Great SMS app, much more options than stock app

    Media:
    Pandora - radio
i heart radio - stream radio stations from around the country
tune wiki- shows lyrics of your music playing

    Other:
Google sky- awesome app that shows stars as you constellations as you look at them through your screen, sorta augmented reality.
Google goggles- take pictures of things and it will try to figure out what they are and then google it for you.
    Photoshop Mobile-photoshop
    Google listen- podcast finder/player
mototorch led- use your flash as a flashlight. can also type in words and it translates to morse code

i have a lot more than those, but those are some of my faves.

Don't intend to raise the dead thread, but have a question.
After reading these, and lusting over the new android phones I took the plunge and picked up a Samsung Moment. ( wanted a keyboard ).

On the gps tracking for the andoid, I saw one that is exportable to google earth after rcording all the data. Now I can't find it!
So the actual queation is; in your opinion, what is the best gps cycling app, and which is exportable to google earth.

( dang, this android Sh*t has a learning curve to it..)

So, I've been walking everywhere lately, and I've been noticing something. Outdoors, most of the men, and nearly all of the women are totally preoccupied with their gadgets. They walk into curbs, sometimes into light poles, each other, or traffic, like zombies on autopilot, their brains in a completely different place than the reality their bodies are stuck ambling about in. And forget the common decency of acknowledging the person you're actually encountering.

Is it a defense mechanism? A security blanket?

So screw it. I'm selling mine. No more $600 phone/ipod/video game/all-engrossing mini-computers to keep you wired 24/7. In fact, no phone at all anymore. Just email, iChat... and... I'm opening my front door. Anyone who wants to say anything can come over, walk right in, and say whatever they want, and it will be in glorious, 256bit depth color, 2000 billion megapixel resolution, 4,000,000HZ refresh, with perfectly sync'd audio at raw, uncompressed 20hz-20,000hz band, streaming full-bandwidth, straight into my my brain in realtime. Holy sht, hallelujiah, where's the tylenol.
