    Wow... That got ugly :-k

Here's an angle that hasn't been discussed. People's intelligence and politeness is divided by the number of people in the group. Strength in numbers? How about stupidity and rudeness in numbers. Critical Mass, peletons in traffic, groups of 30 taking over a wilderness park, teenagers at a dance, frat boys at a party, political conventions, NBA All-Star Weekend - you name it...

"Serious" roadies are like any other sports fanatics - when there's a lot of them at one place they do stupid things, acting out the parts they see played out by their heroes. Most of you reading this have probably done the same.

    Peace, love and stoke people!

Let's see...Why do I run red lights on my road bike?

Because 99.9% of the traffic signals in OC do not activate for bicycles.

Imagine if you will that they changed all of the light sensors in the OC so that the light would only change if three or more cars were waiting and would not change until there were three cars or you got out of your car to push the crosswalk button.

How long would you wait? I think most of you would put up with this for about a week before you started running lights.

Why do I run stop signs? Stupid question because 99% of the cars on the road only do rolling stops also.

Why do I occasionally stray outside the bike lane?

How many of you would drive right through broken glass and other debris if you could avoid it? Now can you tell me why about 50% of all cars seem to find it necessary to drive with their right wheels in the bike lane?

The really sad part of this whole thread to me is how many of you seem willing to limit yourselves from some really great experiences.

One of the great adventures of my life was riding from San Diego to Florida a couple of years ago. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/ride-reports/45025-i-seem-have-run-out-road.html

    That's right... a road ride.

I don't consider my self a roadie, but I do quite a bit of road riding. Two of the best rides I've done all year were the Breathless Agony and the Ride Around the Bear.

Some reasons I ride on the road:

16,000+ miles in the last five years without getting hit. All across the U.S. on some of the scariest roads in the country. I seem to be doing okay.

WOW... What an enlightening thread. At least some of it. The pissing match was kinda lame. This site has grown a lot thats for sure, we all used to know eachother and ride together.

I truly learned a lot from this thread. I can understand taking the lane now especially in certain situations and places. The one I was complaining about though, is really a bad spot and there is no reason to do it. There is no debris, no chance of cars coming out in front and it really does cause me to have to slam on brakes. I have NEVER buzzed anybody on a bike and NEVER would. That's just stupid! Honking after going 10MPH for a 1/4 mile - yep guilty.

Anyhow, I'm still thinking about picking one up. I'm going to stop by the Path this weekend and see if there are any good deals in a bike that will fit me. Anybody know if Tani has road demo's? See if I even like it before I drop $$$$.

I have been in the dirt every day 4 days in a row now though!

I have ridden through many large cities. I have ridden on many interstate highways. I even rode through the Virgin River Gorge on Interstate 15 in Utah. I have been hit by one SUV in bike friendly Grand Junction, CO.

    I sometimes eat Play-Doh.

Torn between these being "douchey" or "dick" comments. I'll wait for the tie-breaker.

I saw a crazy sight last week where a roadie coming down shady canyon went to turn right on to Culver going about 25 mph. Dude decides to take a Tour De France turn into the right lane of Culver and nearly gets ass rammed by an SUV going about 55mph. Dude just keeps on riding like nothing happened. I was about to pull out some popcorn and watch the horror flick unfold. (really glad the guy did not get hurt in truthfulness though)

The question posed to us is, "Do road bikes make you stupid?" I don't think so myself, but this thread is definitely making me stupid, I mean stupider.

I always wonder why people still ride on the road at that section of Culver. There's no bike lane, but there is a bike path off of the street that works just as well.
