    Wow... "bastards" is right!

I'd really like to learn the details of this new law: esp. who authored it and who voted for it.

Yet another amongst a growing list of reasons to leave this f-ed up state.

Sneaky? Not a law but a amendment to a Heath and Safety Code. It is just the way government works. I did a Google search, brings up users groups talking about the impending law in 2006. Law was signed by Arnold in 2007. If anyone is to blame is the car dealers that sold them without telling people about the new law or if there trucks will even pass.

Here is the Vehicle Code passed.

You can thank the A.Q.M.D and The california Air resources board this is one of the later stages in the California smog emissions program, which started as many of you may noticed by swaping out diesel powerd transit vehicles for schools, citys, etc. to l.p.g/ natural gas.

The second step was starting a smoke test inspection program for all heavy duty trucks, or a form of smog testing on highway heavy duty diesel vehicles.

In order for diesel manufacturers to meet emissions requirements they introduced exahust after -treatments and with the use of ultra low sulfer diesel fuel, they have been able to surpass the emissions requirements

    example.
    http://www.everytime.cummins.com/every/misc/Technology/Aftertreatment_System.page

New class A diesel trucks now put out less emissions than natural gas vehicles, but thats another debate with tons of politics that go into it.

As part of the final steps for the new tier emissions plan was the smog testing of personel diesel vehicles and off-highway diesel equipment i.e backhoes, excavation equipment etc.

You can read more about it hear.
    http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm

    & hear
    http://www.aqmd.gov/

Hope that helps a little I dont remember every detail but thats the big chunk of it.

It sucks for all those guys out there that tweaked their trucks by using banks and bullydog crap, but its just finally catching up the the diesel guys like it caught up the hotrodders.

    Yesss california blows!!!!!

If you think the smog program is a good idea then how can you seriously be against this change? It might cost diesel owners a little bit of money but it sounds like this new law just corrects what sounds like a foolish loophole in the first place.

And yes, I think the smog program is a good idea.

I don't know anything about this issue. It is easy (and fun) to bitch about the government but why is this a bad law? Is it just becuase it will cost you a few dollars?

Are you saying that breathing diesel fumes is okay? Why does being different mean that they should be exempt from pollution laws?

Its not just a few dollars more, some of the exhaust after treatment retro fit kits for class A vehicles cost around 10,000 dollars, and have to be cleaned at regular service intervals.

It affects the shipping industry as well, trucks older than 1994 are not allowed into the Harbor and Trucks pre 2004 are not allowed into the harbor if they do not have this retro fit, as of Jan. 1. 2010

What they will impose upon our personel diesel vehicles I am not 100%

Ive heard about this law for some time now. However i figured this would only be for new vehicles that are bought after this law takes place. To change to law after someone has already purchased the vehicle is wrong. The law should read . "Any vehicle bought after 2010 has to be smog checked". Then the buyer already knows the circumstances. One of the reasons i bought a diesel was because of the no smog check law. And of course i own a 98 Dodge Diesel , just making it into the law.

Add another 60.00 plus dollars to my tab this year

The reality is that smog still exists in the south coast basin. Until it is eliminated, regulations will continue to become stricter and stricter. If you don't like it, move somewhere with worse weather and less variety of activities.

They have been trying to cut the emissions on cars for ever and some modes of transportation have gone unchecked. They have squeezed the cars and now its time to look elsewhere for smog forming emissions. So next up was diesel trucks. Motorcycles will be next they are already working on that. Sorry but its about time that we look at the vehicles that have been unchecked for years.

No, but it cost a hell of a lot more to make them pass (in some situations)

Thanks for the info. Like most issues it is more complicated than I assumed.

Slightly off topic but how are leaf blowers legal? They put out more smog than anything else and they are so damn noisy also. OSHA should do something to protect the landscappers. Lawn mowers are bad polluters also but there is isn't any good alternative. There is a good alternative to leaf blowers.

The CARB based its diesel rules on a study written by someone with faked credentials (mail-order diploma). The CARB knew about the fake but went ahead with their rules.
