I'm just curious, by saying that your doing downhill, what does that entail around here, short of going to Mammoth. I mean I like to bomb certain DH trails on my Enduro, is that considered DH, or is it just AM because of the bike I'm on.

If you got the money to buy new, go for it. If you dont, I guess its craigslist for you.
I always keep an eye out for good deals but have yet to buy a used FR/DH bike. But if I did, I would ditch the saddle first thing. Call me crazy, but the idea of riding a seat saturated with somebody's tant drips makes me want to barf.

I agree. New grips and seat before any ride time. I don't like riding other people's bikes, or letting them ride mine for this reason.

And I'm sure it never crossed anybody's mind that it may be stolen. None of the good deals on craigslist are ever stolen merchandise.

There was a guy in HB who was selling a very expensive stolen bike on ebay. After the bike was identified by its owner (and many others), the police were notified and they went to the guys house and picked up the bike. It should be back in the rightful owner's hands today. Of course he claimed it wasn't stolen. He claimed he had the bike for four years (despite it being stolen 2 years ago). The point to this is, if someone identifies the bike you just posted as stolen and can identify it, you may lose it.

Moral of the story is, sometimes you never know what you're really getting when you buy used.

Some of us consider "DH" trails to be those that are more suited for DH style bikes. Sure you can ride an AM or other type of bike down them, but it might not be as fun. ;) And the unspoken trail that you were mentioning used to be more DH oriented until it was sanitized last year.

seems as tho the main reason to go new is warranties/free service/free adjustments etc.

but unless you are going to race, or are EXTREMELY serious about your DH (and at least live within distance of consistently good lift operated DH), doesnt seem to me like there is much of a reason to buy any DH bike for more than 2-3000$.

I would only break the 3k barrier if I were to move to BC or mammoth (or a comparable area)...which hopefully I will within the next year.

that trek isnt bad, but the comparably priced giants are better with better components.

There isnt a trail around here that cant be bombed on a 6inch AM bike, especially an enduro/nomad/reign

    Why go new?????

Valid question. Two reasons really is all that is needed.

first......WARRANTY..... There isnt a Bike manf out there that offers a transferable warranty, I dont care if the owner bought it, walked it home, and sold it on ebay... you have zero recourse mor warranty on your purchase

Second, and this is the more important one, Same reason you are always on teh look out when buying a sprot bike

No matter how well you can check a bike, no matter how much the person you are buying it from can say otherwise..... Its a DH bike, its been ridden hard<just like a sport bike> and there can always be unforseen damage that you cannot find upon inspection.

Here is the bottom line, buy what you want, just dont go pissing and moaning ove rthe internet when you get screwed buying used.
