There might be something similar already but I thought maybe staring a list of DH/FR bikes that most beginners wouldn't schoff at the price.

Mainly this started because I didn't even know they made this bike.

Granted I like to keep what I know about bikes to the things that directly concern me, aka about my bikes.

This is a viable option for somone looking to move from a FR to DH race rig.

    Sure made me consider things.

Starts with Boxxer Race and DHX 4.0 but that's not too bad of a place to start from

    $3,939.99

$4k is still pricy when you can get in for not much more than $1k with a used DH bike. Why anyone new to DH would buy a new bike is beyond me...

    really?

maybe you need to check the bike out properly before you buy, or learn what to look for before buying. Most people don't use bikes anywhere near to their potential, so there are some real deals out there to be had.

I've bought every DH bike I've ever owned used. Why pay $6k for a used bike when you can pay 2500-3500 for a top of the line bike thats a year old? Or as a newb, you can get a servicable bike for not much more than $1k...good enough to figure out if you like DH without breaking the bank.

Maybe you guys are just gear whores who don't feel like you've got a decent bike unless you've got all brand name stuff and spent $6 or 7k. If so I'll be buying that used bike off you in a year or so for a sweet discount, fools!

You don't have to be new to consider this bike. It looks like a pretty good deal for even a seasoned vet. After all, the retail cost is more than what many spend on a frame and fork. And coming from a person that rides an M6 with a 40, Saint everything, King hubs, etc...the difference in ride from a bike like this Trek to having all the bling makes nearly no noticeable difference to 95% of the riders on the trail.

It's good to see a good sub $4k DH race bike.

If you have to ask what it cost, you can't afford it...... I'm just saying....

More or less it was a joke. I just generally don't like buying things used- why? because I want to be the first one to crash on the bike/ put a new scratch on it.

Everyone has their reasons. Would you buy used pillow that someone may have farted on? you wouldn't want to wake up with pink eye the next day would you?

FWIW, I would take a look at the glory1 too. the new ones are sick.

    http://www2.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/model/glory.1/4027/36670/

practically identical build, but you get the better damping on the fork (team vs race), and some more mainstream parts (RF atlas cranks vs response cranks, etc).

plus, I think the maestro is a nicer design than the ABP in terms DHness. if it handles anything like my reign, or like that faith I tried out, it's a BOMB bike.

with regard to new vs used, who cares. get what you can reasonably afford and go nuts. You can still lose a race on an amazing race rig (ask me how I know), and you can spank people left and right on a clapped out beater bike (again, ask me how I know).

If those prices are what you would consider "On the Cheap" for DH, I'm glad I'm scared shit of bombing downhills when I ride

Sure, compared to some other full price DH bikes out there its a deal.

But as you day 95% of riders wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this trek and a full bling bike, I bet 95% of riders out there wouldn't be able to tell much difference between a well tuned $1k used DH bike and something like this for $4k. And I bet a newb wouldn't be able to tell any difference at all.

So why tell them this is a sweet deal when they could drop only $1 or 2k to try out a sport they know little about. As I said, they can always invest more later once they've figured out if they like it. No need to drop $4k on all the bling on something they'll only be able to sell for $2 or 3k later should they decide not to continue....

Agreed, but somethings are different. For example everyone is someone else's left-overs. You will be VERY hard pressed (unless you're like 12?) to find a gf that isn't "used." So if you'll bend your rules for love why not bend them for material possessions? I mean, with exception of pillows and underwear.

Hey, keep it quiet! How else are those of us that like to buy used going to get stuff that's just a year or two old. I will make the exception for bike shorts though.

I dont know about you guys, but I crash way too much to be willing to drop 4k on a "newbie" DH bike. For 1500-2500 it seems like there is alot of stuff out there comprable if not better lightly used that people bought, got scared of riding it, and let sit for a year +/- and want to sell. For someone new to downhill like myself and in the market for a bike I wouldn't consider a new bike until I hone my skills to a very comfortable point where I wouldn't destroy a new $4k+ bike. Just my $.02

Why are people stuck on the idea that this is a bike just for newbies?
