These will be my first full blown road shorts and I'm looking for some advice on which ones are going to be the best bang for my buck.

Only ones I've tried on are the Izumi Slice and I liked them ($100).

Are these decent shorts? Or what should I look at in that price range?

    thanks

I would defitinely recommend bibs for road riding. I am using some Castelli Dome Due bibs I got from Chainlove for super cheap. They work nice for 3hr+ rides. They do run small though (euro sizing).

The tighter the better, it accentuates the junk.:bang:

Both slice and pros are very nice and Bib is the only way to go IMHO.

Also check out endura, they have very nice chamios and well priced.

In all honesty don't by anything retail under 100, you get what you pay for. On a road bike you sit on the saddle way longer.

Performance Ultra bibs are a pretty good "bang for the buck."

Definitly go with some bibs, much more confortable then just the shorts.

I would have to say either the Castelli "Velocissimo" or the "Dom Duo". Very comfortable, good quality and wont hit ya to hard in the wallet either.

I like the Izumi PRO better. The MicroSensor fabric keeps me cooler, and the PRO chamois better controls the... uh... parts in that region that the chamois directly affects. You hear what I'm sayin?

Bibs are nice, but for summertime I don't like the extra fabric. Also, if you need to pull down your pants, for whatever reason, a bib is so complicated that it will make you think twice before pulling down your pants.

Yes, the price is unpleasant. But you can spend the money and feel the pain once, or you can go cheap and feel the pain every time you ride.

+9000 for Pearl Izumi (the higher quality ones, $75+)

The Fox Lycra shorts look kind of nice too. They have some external padding (The launch ones I think) to prevent lacerations on your hip and fore-thigh incase you have a bad fall.

Depending on how you are built Nalini are a great pair of bibs. They run very small usually a full size smaller than normal, but they have the best fit of any bibs I have worn. I picked up some for around $120.

+1 on the bib, especially if you're a big guy. They keep the shorts from sucking under your gut. I haven't tried anything but Voler shorts from velowear, but they fit so well I bought 2 more. They have some pretty good deals when you join their newsletter. I bought all my bibs for < $60 shipped.

The bibs are okay I just don't like the hassle of pulling them down to take a leak and can be a real bummer on a side street doing this. I don't care much for the Pearl Izumi's. I have 3 pairs all over 100 bucks. I found the Sugoui's to be the best and priced around 85 bucks. The first lycra shorts I ever bought were Fox but they were made by another company. These were low end but they were good shorts. I wore them out though and the new stuff from Fox is junk. A lot of my roadie friends swear by Craft and Castelli.

PI Pro Bibs are awesome! Actually, they are way beyond awesome. Get'em from ebay on the cheap too.

I've been pretty happy with the Primal Peloton Bibs I bought a few months back, they're comfortable and seem to be holding up fine, considering they were $90.

    http://www.primalwear.com/p-1302-peloton-mens-bib-cycling-short.aspx

They could maybe use a little more padding in the chamois, but I wore them for the century ride I did last weekend and they worked great.

I got my performance elite bib for about $60 bucks and i like them a lot. they are kinda of tighter/smaller than i was expecting i should have gotten the next size up but on well they show off the buck knuckle and the thighs. its worth it to at least try them on.

What are the benefits of bibs compared to stand alone shorts? I've been riding for years, never worn them, and lately it seems everyone is pushing them. Am I totally missing out on the amazingness of bibs during my long road rides?
