Just saw on the news that a cyclist was struck and killed by a car in Newport Beach tonite. I feel for the families of both the cyclist and the person who hit them. I hear that alcohol could have played a factor on the driver. I ride mtn and road but limit my road riding to mostly bike paths.

This makes my heart so heavy. Why is the population of Orange County so complacent about the deaths of a cyclist every month? This senseless carnage must end!
Deepest condolences to the affected families.

The bimbo who ran this guy down yesterday had 13 citations since 2005. She was drunk and no doubt speeding. It was not dark. The sun was not in her eyes, yet if you read the comments in these cases you will always find someone who will blame the cyclist. It always amazes me when someone gets hit from behind while in the bike lane and some idiot says "yea well these arrogant jersey wearing cyclist are always blowing stop signs" ect. Come on. STOP KILLING US!

    Damn.

I was broadsided on my bmx bike when I was a kid, it was scary.

Too many people in SoCal are distracted and in a hurry when operating motor vehicles.

It's almost like were thier collateral damage, such a shame!!

Everyone needs to just no when to say when and slow the #%< down!!!!

No one cares. Rinse and repeat. If you're riding a bike, you're disposable.

16 Traffic tickets at 22 and how is she still allowed to drive????????????????#-o
    [IMG]
Police said a Newport Beach woman failed a field sobriety test from police after she allegedly hit a bicyclist with her car in Newport Coast on Monday night.

Danae Marie Miller, 22, was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated related to a fatal crash on San Joaquin Hills Road just before 6 p.m. Monday. She posted $100,000 bail early Tuesday and has been released, Orange County Sheriff's Department records show.

Police said Miller was driving eastbound on San Joaquin between Spyglass Hill Road and Newport Ridge Drive West when she hit a man riding his bike in the same direction. Authorities have not released the name of the man who died at the scene pending notification of next of kin.

Newport Beach Police Officer Rachel Johnson said police always give drivers involved in fatal crashes a field sobriety test as part of their investigation. Miller failed her test, Johnson said.

Court records show that since 2005, Miller has received 16 traffic citations. She received six tickets for speeding or driving too fast for conditions each year between 2005 and 2009, a ticket in 2006 for driving the wrong way on a street, a failure to stop at a stop sign in 2007, and tickets in 2009 and 2010 for talking on her cell phone while driving.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call investigator Todd Bush at (949) 644-3746.

How does that chick have a license? Or, maybe she doesn't. Tack on the suspended. The article lists 9 of her 16 tickets. Wanna bet she's got a few FTA's as well?
If so on the FTA's; she should get no bail. Guess daddy can't stop her from going to Chowchilla soon.
RIP for the poor guy she murdered.

And note, two tix in 2009 & 2010 for talking on her cell phone... tragic when quality Bluetooth units are just $25.00 and so many cars today are Bluetooth equipped.

Not only did she get bail, but it was posted the very next day (100K) That means that either 100K was paid in cash, or her family paid $10,000 in cash to a bondsman and they in turn put up surety bond with the court.....but the family had to have had 200K in real estate as collateral.

    don't ask me how I know#-o

    DMV points

I had to look this up. Copy and pasted from DMV web site.

    Points on The Driver Record

The DMV keeps a public record of all your traffic convictions and collisions. Each occurrence stays on your record for 36 months, or longer, depending on the type of conviction.

The Negligent Operator Treatment System (NOTS) is based on negligent operator points and consists of a computer generated series of warning letters and progressive sanctions against the driving privilege.

You may be considered a negligent operator, when your driving record shows one of the following "point count" totals.
    4 points in 12 months
    6 points in 24 months
    8 points in 36 months

Some examples of one point violations:
    A traffic conviction.
    An at-fault collision.

Some examples of two point violations:
    Reckless driving or hit-and-run driving
Driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs
Driving while driver license is suspended or revoked

If you get 4 points in 12 months, you will lose your driver license. A violation received in a commercial vehicle carries one and one-half times the point count normally assessed. For detailed point count information refer to the California Commercial Driver Handbook.

As predicted, the following quote is from the comment section below the cyclist story.

"Wow I bet 90% of the idiots who comment here have driven drunk in their lives at least once. especially when they were 22. Also I bet all you fools text while you drive!! The real Moron in this sad story is the CYCLIST!!! These people ride two feet out of the bike lane and constantly slow down traffic because of their power tripping attitudes!!. Ive lived in Spyglass hill my whole life and deal with these idiots on PCH every morning. What they do is literally the most dangerous thing you can do. Seriously bungee jumping is a hundred times safer. These people dress up in Spandex covered in Windex and Suburu adds. what a bunch of posers! YOURE NOT SPONSORED!!! I want to throw my skateboard at your spokes everytime I SE YOU! Same A%$%holes that are managers at Banks ... Mortgage scum total MICHAEL SCOTTS! I feel really bad for the girl. STAY ON THE SIDEWALKS AND STOP PLAYING IN TRAFFIC IDIOTS!!!!!

As much as I love my road bike, this thread seriously makes me want to stick to mountain biking. These comments are downright disturbing. To think that when I am riding in a bike lane there is people driving past me that HATE ME and WANT TO KILL ME for riding my bike.
Unreal. We live in a sick world.
