The damage to the car shows the impact was the right headlight, corner of the bumper, and side of car. Don't think it will be hard to figure out who is at fault here. Poor woman was knocked out of her shoes (one still on the bike) and went into the windshield.

I hope to hear good news.

Accident appeared to be before that first turnout on Santiago just past Jamboree...

Clearly the cyclist, for being on the road. And look at the damage she did to the car! Probably jealous, because she was stuck on a bike and not riding in a Lexus.

I look forward to absolutely nothing happening to the driver...

    Sad, but true too often.

Edit: They just updated the story on OCregister and sounds like I was wrong. Says the cyclist made a 90 degree turn into the traffic lane. ??
Woman is in critical condition. Hopefully she recovers soon.

In the comments below the article, it mentions that Sheri Norton died of her injuries. Very sad news if true.

The bicyclist, who was in the designated bike lane, and the driver were both traveling eastbound on Santiago Canyon Road Avenue, Lopez said.

For unknown reasons, the bicyclist made a 90-degree turn in front of incoming traffic and was struck by the driver. It appears that the driver was traveling at 50 mph, the appropriate speed for the area, Lopez said.

These two statement seem to be a bit at odds, unfortunately this is exactly how our friend and cyclist Dan Thomas was killed, he was in the bike lane on Shady Canyon and then went to turn back when his fiance stopped, he turned out into the lane to turn around and was struck and killed...he apparently didn't hear or see the truck coming.

    Very Sad on both accounts.

I took the canyon home today and rode by the crash scene. My heart dropped, so freaking tragic. You could tell from the scene it wasn't a case of the driver driving in the bike lane. I'll be praying for everyone involved. I can't imagine how hard this will be to the family of Sheri and the driver of that car.

Not sure if she has passed on, but know one was on life-support.

Is it just me or does santiago canyon take a lot of riders each year. My memory is sketchy, but this seems like a reoccuing thread. Bummer.

Yet, a member has put themselves in the jurors' box and convicted the driver without knowing/hearing evidence of being guilty.:?:

At 6:00pm today, the lights were set to blinking red near that area and they were blocking off the eastbound lanes. Maybe to investigate more? So sad.

I was planning on starting to ride my roadie in the canyon more, but now . . . car racing seems so much safer.

You all seem to be missing the part of the report that the cyclist made a sudden 90 degree turn. If that is the case, then the cyclist is at fault.

Updated comments on OC Register indicate that the cyclist, Sheri Norton, a 20-year, experienced road cyclist was disconnected from life support and died from the traumatic injuries. Cause of the accident is all speculation. She might have tried to turn around for a dropped item, e.g. her Garmin. It is a tragic accident and you can only be as careful as possible and beware of your surroundings as best as you can, but accidents will still happen. So sorry for her family and friends.

The OC register has pics of the damaged Lexus and of the bike. The car has damage to the right bumper and the bike's wheels are intact.....more likely the biker was side-swiped and not hit dead-on ( if it had made a 90 degree turn in front of the car)

Whether the cyclist was in the bike lane or not I don't know........:(

Well...that's probably what the driver said.....too bad the cyclist isn't around to give her side of the story.....
