http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2012/08/28/bicyclist-25-dies-following-hit-and-run-in-rancho-cucamonga/ I did a search and didnt find anything so I hope I am not reposting. Saw some friends today at the Disney Marathon and I learned that their cousin was the victim. She had some pics and I told her I knew the perfect place to post them. I told her that the STR family is always supportive in sending healing vibes and prayers. The family is devastated and I am sure they appreciate it during these rough times. My friend Daisy shared a story with me. She said that there was a gentleman that showed up with a road bike to a vigil they had by the makeshift memorial. She right away wondered if he was a friend of Michael. Daisy walked over to the gentleman and asked. He said that he had never met Michael before but he saw the story on the news and felt compelled to pay respects. He said cyclists of all kinds can relate to these tragedies and stick together. He had ridden all the way from the LA basin to Cucamonga. Daisy was appalled. I think its awesome!! His coworkers at Apple painted his bike white and set up this memorial.
I don't think painting his bike was a good idea in regards to evidence like paint from it on the hitter's truck or vice versa.
Judging by the pic in the story linked above. that's not the bike he was riding when the accident occurred. The part I don't get is the Sheriff's statement: “Unless the driver is intoxicated, nothing other than having a traffic accident taken is going to come out of this,” said Sgt. Greg Kreps from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department. What on earth is that supposed to mean?
I could understand someone not being charged with murder. If I were driving in my car and had an accident with another car and someone died. It would be scary to think you could be charged with murder. But the fact it was hit and run. That deserves life in prison.
We all make mistakes, and it's how you handle them that counts. Maybe hitting this man was purely an accident, and perhaps the cyclist had some fault in the situation. But the driver running away is a conscious choice that deserves the stiffest possible punishment.
I agree that accidents happen all the time no matter who's fault. But fleeing the scene is straight inhumane. Yes the sheriffs statement has got to be a typo. These newpaper reports always have bad/missing info. They also failed to say that not only was he hit but dragged before ending up by the gutter. The family members told me that his face was pretty mangled up from being dragged on the asphalt. Oh and God bless the lady shown in the report that rushed over to try and help. I cant imagine how horrific of a scene it was for her to experience. She stayed by his side and comforted him as much as possible as he squirmed and tried to speak after the trauma. The family refers to her as his "guardian angel" .
