i have a nice scar on my ankle from a chainring cut... i run a bash guard on all my bikes after that incident
since this post i did it to myself too! just standing there ontop of that little short climb on coyote near the end...bike rolled sideways and the chainring bit into my right ankle 3 teeth marks LOL
Good call on hitting the ER. Everything should heal up nicely. Something that will cut down on the chainring damage (at least on downhills) is to shift to the largest chainring in front. The chain will cover the teeth and you'll probably minimize the mangling of your flesh.
I've got some chainring scars too, and had been thinking about this topic lately. I've been paying attention on my last few rides, and about the only time I hit the big ring is on the street back to Cooks after the Luge, or a couple other similar situations. I could easily live without it. Frequent pain with little gain: So why do any of us non-downhillers bother to run a big ring? :-k
You can big ring it on some nice smooth downhill singletrack... You can crank through the flats... You can stand up and crank up some short rollers so you can bomb down the other side... I'd love to run this setup:
I think I have the complete engineering drawing for Wellgo MG-1 carved into the back of my legs with a few notes on my shins. Those pedals are mean, but they grip well!
Used to have a little scar just below my lower lip from a nasty little chainring incident. Can't really see it anymore though, unless I look closely.8-[
So how did your lower lip get in contact with your chainring? Maintenance and Murphys Law did it to me. What can go wrong, will go wrong. Had taken the right crank off to get to the bottom bracket. I also had some new pedals to put on. Rather than put the crank back on and then loosen up the pedal I tried loosening it up by pulling on the crank arm (gripped in my left hand) towards me, while pushing with the wrench in the right. Needless to say the pedal bolt loosened up all of a sudden and the crank arm with chainrings attached came whipping back into my face. Blood inside my mouth, blood outside my mouth, but nothing broken, and after a half hour or so of cursing my stupidity the pain actually began to subside.:bang:Live and learn.
