So I called Carbon Canyon park today to see if I could get an idea of when the state park will be reopening and the person I spoke to on the phone told me that most likely the park will be closed at least a year!!....I thought I'd read somewhere that it was gonna be reopening sometime mid jan? Anyone else have any info on this?
I hope it is open for the spring flowers. Here we go again, the closing of public lands in So-cal makes no sense to me. Beside Chino Hills grasslands seem to burn every year...bring back the cow! Dean
It's a control thing. Park rangers like to assert their authority so they can feel like they have some sort of power over the lowly masses.
i went down there last week and the ranger showed me there sign saying that the parks going to be closed indefinitely for a year. just because over 14,000acres burned according to the ranger
Here's a summary of the damage as reported in the OC Register just after the fire. "A weekend wildfire scorched nearly all of the 14,102-acre Chino Hills State Park...The only piece that didn’t burn, in fact, was Coal Canyon, a 650-acre parcel across the 91freeway...If the coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats found in the park burn too frequently there’s a risk of “type conversion”: non-native weeds, for example, replacing what used to be robust stands of native shrubs and trees." While many SoCal environments are amazingly fire resilient, there are still concerns, especially when people are in an area that is being preserved as wilderness. It's an easy time for new, illegal trails to be created, erosion is a bigger concern than when there's ground cover, and animals already struggling in an impaired ecosystem will have that much harder time if they're competing with people, horses, and bikes. After Whiting, Santiago Oaks, and the Cleveland National Forest all had closures of 6 months to a year following recent fires, I'm pleasantly surprised that CHSP might be open so soon. I just hope people treat it with care.
Someone send an email to Ranger Stephen or John Roe to get the real scoop. If you need their email addys PM me.
