Rode a quicky at Chino for the first time in a while today. South Ridge and North Ridge are fine, in fact North Ridge is classic double track. Smooth and fast coming down. Also went down Bovinian, which was really overgrown, but rideable at least downhill. We're talking 8 foot plants at the bottom. Went up Sycamore Cyn which was overgrown at the bottom but OK after about 1/2 way up. I also took a look at Raptor at 4 corners and it looked OG, too. I'm guessing most of the singletrack will be pretty bad until someone gets to brushing it.
This is one park that I wish they would allow horizontal brush trimmers in. Not all season, just a couple of passes while it's wet & green to keep the mustard at bay on the singletracks.
I've volunteered there the last two years with SHARE and Trails for all the next and I never rode it except those days while we worked. I'm going to pass this year.
My g/f rode it Sunday and said she ran over a snake. She was coming down Sycamore and the mustards were really high. She couldn't see around the corner and by the time she got there, a snake was laying in the middle of the trail. The only thing she could do was ride faster and run the sucka over. I told her she should have bunny hopped it. Oh yeah, that was her 4th snake sighting of the day. I rode down Bovinian last Thurs and I couldn't even see the trail Just the tops of the mustards showed me where the trail let. There was a small enough gap between the top of the weeds to see the trail.
chino. agree, chino is totaly overgrown.the mustard plant must be 7 ft tall. i saw a rattler last week also. ill start to ride chino after the plants start to die down, until then, the ridin isnt very fun right now unless u like to ride in the jungle!:-k :-k
Chino is madly overgrown! Some minor trails are completely covered with vegetation to the point where they no longer exist! Anyway, why am i complaining when i don't even take those minor trails, heh.
they do....the last time i rode the middle trail(i dont know what its called, i normally ride the north side now) which was about a month ago i had to turn around becasue i ran into about 20 or so cows. there are also tons of cow shit everywhere.
I got behind a cow once on East Fenceline singletrack for about 1/2 mile and couldn't pass it. It was a pace cow. I've run into small herds at night, too, which is pretty freaky.
Go around the thing. It's just a cow. Although, we did have a few cows that would run you to the fence, but I can't imagine cows like that at Chino Hills. I grew up on a 120 acre ranch just outside of Yreka, CA.
I did the same at Chino. We had exited a downhill trail, made a hard right and both of us almost ran straight into a pair. Something that big looms up quickly in the dark.
Somthing about Chino Hills SP and dark doesn't make sense. I thought that place closed at sunset. Although, that would be a nice place to ride around at night time.
Speaking of cows... A nearby "mtb ranch" we'd often ride back in Texas had many head of longhorn cattle grazing on his property. After a ride you could order up a grass-fed, all natural, hormone-free longhorn burger--you probably road by the "donor" on your last visit--and enjoy an excellent post-ride meal (and shower)! :bang:
yes it did.....there was a baby cow towards the back and i was trying to get close to take a picture on my phone everytime i did most would start to run away....but the one closed to the calf(i am amassuming it was its mom) would turn around and give me a very evil look like it was going to attack or something...since i was alone i decided not to risk getting hurt, so i turned around.....plus it was getting dark and i didnt have a light.
as long as you dont park inside the park then you will be fine....but they have no problem locking your car inside the parking lot....they might even tow it...almost happened to me.
Nope, not all true. We were out there years ago on our weekly night ride which we had been doing for about 6 months when all of a sudden a ranger's truck came flying up over a little rise and almost skidded into us. He got out of the truck yelling at us "That didn't we know the park closed at dusk?". We didn't lie, we just told him we thought it would be alright. He told us he could give us an expensive ticket, but because this was our first and last warning he was going to let us off. I later met him again on a trail working day and he explained to me that the animals which many are nocturnal need a break from all the human activity and night time was not a good time to be there. Not a bad guy just a little excitable. I have since heard of many others riding there at night with no problem. But I've had my warning.
