from what i understand the location is out in ridgecrest at the china lakes naval base. they are mojave green rattlers, the deadliest kind, however we dont have them around here. we have mostly the western diamondbacks, still deadly just not as deadly or should i say the venom they excrete does not penetrate the nervous system as well as the blood stream. just a nice thought before you go to bed.

 

Too bad that den isn't out on the firing range. The drop testing out there would take care of that real fast.

I personally would rather have rats, mice and other creatures, than snakes.......that could kill you.....

I second that. I was scared senseless when I came within 2 feet of ONE. Can't imagine what I'd do if I ran into this.

 

School girls would be telling me to shut the f### up if I came across that on a trail.

Am I the only person here who actually likes rattle snakes? Those pics are seriously cool.

nah rats and mice are much worse................ rats are indirectly responsible for killing 1/3 of the population during the bubonic plague. We could use some more snakes in the canyons the mice are spreading haunta virus like crazy.

 

that dirt composition is not off of modjeska.. too much sand... cool pic though.. nothing like some grilled rattler for an after ride snack.. Ive got the knife.. who's got the habachi?

 

those are prairie rattlesnakes somewhere up north where the have communal dens

 

Here's a couple that I ran across at Santiago Oaks. different days though, but still, seems I see nmore snakes there than in other parks I ride.

Ya, this guy was over 3 ft long. I tried to take a picture before it went away. It would've been cool to take take a pic while it was in "strike" pose.

 

I agree, lots of snakes this year. A few days ago I saw a 4 foot southern pacific rattler in the middle of the street at CHSP. He was just chillin on the black top near the ranger station and did not care that I was staring at him. This is the first large rattler I've seen in CHSP. I look forward to many more!

Jeff Stafford pulled these 41 bull snakes from the crawl space beneath a townhouse in Westminster Sunday afternoon, he said. The cache of crawlers are unusual for their number and size for this early in the season, experts said.

Jeff Stafford's buddy owes him a few beers — and 41 brews would still be a bargain for the colony of bull snakes Stafford found slithering in the crawl space of friend's townhome in Westminster Sunday.

The 25-year-old banker had stopped by his friend's place near Federal Boulevard and West 112th Avenue to say "hi." He was wearing flip flops.

His friend, who asked to remain anonymous, was tending to a leaky pipe beneath the home, while Stafford chatted with his friend's wife.

"Thirty seconds later I heard what sounded like the yelp of a small, frightened child," Stafford said Monday.
His friend had spotted a snake in the muddy crawl space.
"Dude, you've got to go get it," Stafford recalled him saying Monday.

With a flashlight and a stick of firewood, Stafford climbed into the crawl space and onto the blue tarp that covered the muddy surface.

The tarp moved beneath him; the floor writhed in bull snakes — 41 of them by the time Stafford got through stuffing them into a trash bag.

"They were moving pretty slow, so I think they were still hibernating," he said.

An obvious crack was likely their entrance way, said Stafford, a native of Texas who spent last year traveling in the bush in Australia, were snakes were common encounters, he said.

His friend doesn't want to be named because he doesn't want to discuss the discovery, Stafford said.

"We went out for a beer afterward," said Stafford, who took the bag of snakes to an open field several miles out of town.

That was a smart move, said Mel Horne, owner of Alpha Animal Control in Broomfield, who removes snakes and other varmints for a living.

Snakes can find their way back to a comfortable spot unless they're taken several miles away, he said.

Bull snakes and garter snakes are known to hide in cool, dark spaces beneath homes in the northern metro area, he said.

Bull snakes, often called gopher snakes, are not poisonous and feed on field mice, large insects, lizards and other snakes, according to experts.

They grow large — up to 6 feet long — so their fright factor is their greatest risk to humans, especially since they resemble a rattlesnake and the snore-like hiss is often mistaken for a rattle.
