I replaced my 8-speed cassette with a 9-speed (SRAM). I noticed when I started tightening the cassette nut (with the casette tool), it felt like there were little "clicks" (ratcheting) as I tightened it. Is this normal?

I've only done it with Shimano cassettes, but on those it is normal. There are little notches/detents on the lockring that help prevent it from coming loose.

+1 It's normal for, I think all of them. I've installed SRAM, Shimano, Sunrace, etc 8,9,10 speed cassettes, and they all start clicking as you tighten the lock nut down.
