Yes but the bone was still horizontal. From your pics and quote... You don't qualify for that option. Go with the docs on this one.

When I broke mine, my ortho (who's a friend of mine) said you can monitor the break for up to 4 weeks and decide to do surgery anytime within that period. Some docs will even take longer depending on the break and how it's healing. Yes, bone cells are are forming during this time but the cells haven't calcified to the point the bone has to be broken, they are setting themselves up and the doc can view by x-ray to make sure it's healing well and full movement will be attained. So....one week is nothing for a doc to decide on surgery.

BTW, there was a journal article in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (March 2008 )that recommends surgical intervention over passive healing. This goes against my own doc's (again my friend's) advice wich he gladly pointed out to me after I was all healed up without surgical intervention.

Here is the journal's conclusion from the abstract:

"Operative fixation of a displaced fracture of the clavicular shaft results in improved functional outcome and a lower rate of malunion and nonunion compared with nonoperative treatment at one year of follow-up."

    What mouse jockey said.

Even if it has had a week or so to heal they will...excuse me...rebreak it :( and reset and pin it as needed. Yeah, the time it was healing will be lost, but you'll be better off in the long run.

Don't sweat it. I didn't have surgery to repair my clavicle until two weeks after I broke it. (Sweet Ti upgrade.)

For me the mental scars took months longer to heal than my clavicle did. (Fear of getting hurt again.)

    Hang in there.

Yeah with a single break as long as the bones are touching they really don't do anything except put you in a clavicle splint and let it heal.

One week is not long at all. I had NO connection between the bones on mine after 2 months , the ends had healed over but no connection between bones yet. At that point I was no longer wearing the sling and even had a 10lb weight to pull on the shoulder for xray and didn't even know until xray tech came in looking shocked and asking if i was in pain

But with multiple breaks I would seriously get it looked at by an ortho. I would be very shocked if they dont at least pin it.

Did they give you a sling or clavicle splint yet(the backpack thingy with out the pack)

So you'll be racing next Monday night?

How did the surgery go, and does it feel any better now that it's held together?

Did they get you out of sling in into the collar thing? It will allow you to have much more stability, but then your pinned your probably ok there.

Just a little update.Went back to the ortho today (whooo no work today) and it is healing great.I am now able to raise my arm above my head ,albeit painful.I am also doing some light exercises with a 3 pound weight.I think I will be ready to give the loop a go in 2 weeks.
