Broke my arm in Whiting Ranch

I take full responsibility for those attempts. Having had numerous dislocations in my OTHER shoulder, thats what I thought it was. I asked both people to try and I asked them both to stop when I almost passed out. It was all my doing. I do suspect the arm is worse now because of it, but at the time I thought there was a chance it could make it better.

Live (hopefully) and learn.

All of the trails seem to be littered with these "evil rogue rocks" that attack when you least expect it, in places once thought to be safe. Be careful out there people, we have a new predator

As for the rant, I have to agree (though I'm not as stern as mech). I was at a race when someone asked me to look at his arm; he had fallen and thought it was dislocated, needed to be put back in place. I wouldn't touch it, and good thing, turns out it was broken.

As much as everyone hates to see their doctor, there is a reason the profession has blossomed over the years and sometimes the longer you wait, the more you try to avoid it, the worse the outcome.

Unless the person assisting you on the trails is a medical professional with a bunch of experience, you shouldn't let them reset your body parts. Think about it, you wouldn't let someone reset your bike unless you knew that they knew what they were doing, and bike parts are replaced a bit easier than body parts

 

I feel for you man. Echoing what others have said - always ride with friends and heal fast, have some bike DVD's on standby and look forward to getting back to your fave pastime in the near future

I can attest from my recent injury that if you follow the prescribed PT to a T you'll be back sooner rather than later.
VQ is a good goal for you. Luckily you can spin on a trainer while recovering to keep some sort of fitness.

Echoing what Mech and some of the others said, it's not a good idea to have random folks attempt these procedures, much better to call the pro's and wait with the injured until qualified help arrives. Heal quickly!
BTW- where is that physician based- Sten Kramer??? Is he an orthopedic surgeon? Which hospital does he work out of?
This would be good information for us, given all the injuries here of late...THANKS!

 

Seriously. Maybe STR can get sponsored by an orthopedic clinic. They'd get lots of business from this crowd...

 

Sorry to hear that, I believe I saw you at Old Camp. I was up there around that same time and remember seeing a guy in a path jersey. Sorry man...

 

Update: It turns out worse than I thought. Tomorrow at noon I go in for surgery. The entire top of my humerus is smashed. They are going to try and mush it back together with plates, but they said the ball might still die due to lack of blood. Much like Floyd Landis's hip. If that happens then they cut off the bone and put in a titanium ball.

As you can imagine I'm pretty bummed.

I should be in the hospital for 2 or 3 days, I'll post the latest after that.

SugaMama - Turns out Sten Kramer doesn't do surgery so I had to goto another Dr. Sten helped my knee tendonitis and is in Newport Beach. (and is a great mtber, check out 2007 VQ results)

Padre- Heya, It was at the end of that Cow Trail, just before it meets up with the fireroad. There is this right hand turn that you can take flat on the left side or go over a bump on the right. I went right and didn't expect all the rocks and dip right after it. I was kinda unweighted at the time and the bike went right and I straight. Once again pilot error. Can't blame any long chainstays for this.
Just happened to land all my clydesdalness on one rock.

Wow, I wish I could sound as upbeat as you do with such a horrific injury. I'm sure your good attitude will help a lot with a speedy recovery. Healing vibes your way.

Mind over matter...you've got a great attitude, and that's how I know you're gonna be just fine. Best wishes with the surgery and the rehab! Sounds like you've got a lot of support. :wave:
