So I've ran XTR trails on my last 3 bikes and love them. You can deffinetly tell the difference from cheapo avid slx brakes compared to the xtr from my experience. But they are hard to come by and my "deal" has vanished. Anyone have any experience with brands like Formula one and Magura MT8s these will be on a New 650b nomad build and I do not need to hear about this is a first world Problem!
If you like XTR trails just get XT. Besides weight only difference I know I done piece caliper vs two piece.
Love Formulas, love the XTs. Avids are finicky but when you get to know them, they work excellently. Just helped a friend bleed MT8s and the video tutorial is lacking. The standard bleed kit sucks. Each bleed requires a full bottle of Royal Blood fluid. And those frikkin EBT screws strip like a... uh.... I will skip my adjectives as they offend. If I were to nit pick Shimano brakes, it would be the sandpaper feel and noise they make when you engage them. Everything else I own, Avids and Formulas, have a smooth rotor to pad engagement. I might try aftermarket pads next time.
MT8s are great brakes. I agree that the Magura video is not the best. I have found that a modified Shimano gravity bleed works best and only uses about 20 cc of the pricey Royal Blood. I'll post details if needed, in another thread. Just took my MT8s through the nightmare that was the Whiskey 50 and they performed admirably, and quietly, in rain, hail, snow, mud, and ice. Wish I had a pic of the ice build-up on the levers... That said, IMHO, the best brake for the money is the XT.
If anyone's Avids are noisy, then they are setup wrong. I've got Juicy 3, 5, & BB7's. They are as quiet as my Formula RX's which are silent. As for power, i have never used Shimano brakes. But, all of my Avids stop my 165lbs+bike of momentum with one finger braking. They do this as well as the Formula's.
I have found little difference in the SLX or XT brakes in modulation and power. Either one, in my opinion, is a solid brake.
Been running XT since '09 and love it. I never ran into a pair of quiet Avid brakes though. New or old, they always make noise.
