Try a Russ Denny, they are made in Hemet and are full custom at a reasonalbe price and can actually drive there to pick it up. Strong makes good frames also. Ventana also used to make a road bike (El Martillo). Here is the link to Russ Denny.

I have been a fan of and rode (still ride em too) Bianchi since the mid '70s and I do realize there are other "good" brands and have ridden some fine road machines other then Bianchi but I gotta recommend a Bianchi.

The new Oltre Super Record is the one that does it for me but I do not have the funds for it as they are being saved for other aspects of cycling.

If the Oltre is out of the prince range then I would look into one of the C2C's like the Infinito Athena

Both made in the Italian factory

    Now for some visual stimulation

I got a Pinarello FP3 in the "naked" color scheme. It cost about 35% less than the big advertisers' bikes and I have no complaints about how it rides.

Terry makes steel bikes for girls that are pretty cool.

We few people mentioned frames made in the USA. Are there any American made wheels, tires, tubes, seats, brakes, gears, chains, shifters, etc? (I don't think so but I honestly don't know.)

The original poster isn't looking for an American made frame, she wants an American made bike. Is an American made frame loaded with foreign components really an American made bike?

For that kind of money, you won't find anything decent that's American made, and anything from China, Taiwan, etc. Sorry to be a bearer of bad news. But, to help, maybe a bit more info. Here is basically how it works. Big brands and boutique brands have their bikes made oversees to keep retail costs down. They only make them inhouse if they want an extra level of quality control that they feel they can't get in China, etc. The reality is that the big Chinese (used as a generalization for far east) manufacturers do so many high end bikes that the quality is very good and usually better than what we can do here. They've expanded their technology in conjuction with the big brands. There is no point developing techniques within their own country if there isn't a big enough cost benefit to it.

Anyways, BMC, Cervelo, BH, Bianchi, Pinarello, Colnago, etc. all have their bikes made in China up to some of the most expensive high end models. The Colnago CX-1, the Pinarello, FP2, 3, 4, 5, all made in China. So if you want boutique carbon, not made in China, you'll be paying around 5,000.

Next you'll have to decide on comfort geometry (Specialized Roubaix, etc.) or go race geometry (Specialized Tarmac). Most brands have 2 separate lines in either geometry, if they do not, find out which area they lean towards.

Steel. The boutique brands like Pegoretti (Serotta, Davidson, etc.) are the shiznit. Ride awesome, are lightweight, and are expensive. Cheap steel may fall within your price range, but it will not have good joints/welds and performance and weight will suffer and will be made in China. Old steel frames from years ago ride great and can be bought off Ebay at a reasonable price, in fact, some within your price range. But, they will be heavy and flexy compared to modern steel due to technology leaps. They ride awesome and are smooth, but only come in race geometry (unless you find a touring model, etc.) since comfort geometry didn't exist.

I could go on, but I'll stop. Good luck.

I have always considered the heart and soul of the bike to be the frame, so I would consider an American frame using conventional componentry an American bike.

um, do you know what kind of money i'm talking? i don't believe i dropped specific #'s. with that said, and with also having said i wanted boutique, AND knowing a just a teensy bit about bikes, i think i realize how much i'm talking when i say i 'want boutique'.

bearer of bad news? tks for the insult, but just bc i'm female, doesn't mean i'm clueless! oh, & also good job insulting ALL asians while you were at it! china's lack of quality does not speak for the entire far east. in fact, taiwan is enormous steps above china's quality AND japan is MILES above that! so, why don't you broaden your narrow mind a bit & educate yourself.

um, actually, bmc & cervelo (and perhaps more that you listed that i'm not aware of) are made in taiwan NOT china. again, it's better quality.

    thanks

btw, instead of picking up that pink independent fab ti crown jewel for, oh, say $6-7k (now i'm dropping #'s) that i was drooling over, i decided to skip it & sock away the cash into my IRA instead... besides, my existing roadie just got a makeover! check it! :bang:
