If you ride, you should carry the basic repair tools and be prepared to fix a mechanical on the trail. Besides tube and air, I put together a small plastic box or bag of the following goodies. The idea with this list was small light weight but critical items. Others can probably add to the list.
    chain link / chain pins
    shift cable
    chain ring bolts
    deraileur hanger
patch kit (in case run out of tubes)
    brake pads
    duck tape or electrical tape
    multi tool

It works pretty good. You never know what is going to happen, but these items can usually get you off the mountian.

    Bump...

With all of the mechanicals I've seen the past few weeks, I felt it was a good time to bump this thread.

Mechanicals we've had to deal with the past 30 days...
    (5) flat tires
    (1) Taco'd wheel
    (3) broken chains
    (1) broken derailler hanger
    (1) snapped shifter cable (thankfully 1mtbjunkie carries a spare)

    (2) deraillers were in need of adjustment
    (1) stem needed to be tightened

    (1) blingy bike was in serious need of chain lubricant
    (1) squeaky bike had noise disappear after pivot was tightened

...EVERY rider should carry one of these in their Camelbak.... I mean EVERYONE!

Good idea! This is something I don't have in my pack. Way to make my pack even heavier. I might as well throw in a brake cable while I'm at it.

Add to that a snapped off rear derailleur on yesterday's OTB bulldog loop ride at Malibu Creek:

Followed by a broken plier multi-tool when trying to cut the cable:

    1. Pretty sure you have a spare cable in your 40 pound Camelbak... Just can't find it!

    2. I was SHOCKED to see Eddie had a spare cable in his Camelbak...
Light... Packs nicely.... Totally saved the ride for the guy who's cable snapped (lots of climbing)

I'm new to my bike, and would be very helpful if someone could get a Maintenance clinic going. Maybe after the Sunday loop??

Planning an official Bike Maintenance Night as you read this post.

    Haven't decided on the day....
Most likely one Wednesday or Saturday evening

Don't see why we can't have one after a Sunday Loop Ride as well!! ;)

I vote for having the clinic after the Sunday Fully ride(s).

Perfect lead in with the ride and a large group of newbs/beginners in need of learning - as well as seasoned "pros" for mentoring.

Any day works for me. The reason I suggested sunday loop was because of
newBs like me that will attend. Or any evening would work.

So it's been a little over a year since this thread has had an update.

I stumbled upon a nice set of videos on PinkBike called Tech Tuesday. I think almost everyone can find at least one video that will teach them something they didn't know. The latest set of videos are by the great Richard Cunningham. Dude knows his chit.

Also, I know the last clinic wasn't that long ago, but seeing as summer is on it's way maybe we should think about the next one soon.

Here's a link to one I think will help everyone. If you scroll down you can find all 32 installments.
