Odorless mineral spirits and this....
+1 Simple Green
Simple Green in a Gatorade bottle.
Soak, shake, soak, shake, compressed air, wipe clean/dry with rag.
I've tried a lot of cleaners (simple green, zep, other degreasers) and nothing comes close to Park's Chainbrite citrus cleaner. It's a little expensive but the results are amazing.
cassettes, chains, crank arms, chainrings, derailleurs, most small parts. It actually works well even though I'm usually not a proponent of cheap tools. I usually use a 50/50 mix of water and simple green and use the heater. I've even been able to dunk small engine parts (small carbs, valves, lifters, etc..) as well.
Rock n Roll Gold chain cleaner and lube all in one.....great product
Have been using Pedros Chain Machine + Pedros "Oranj Peelz" citrus Degreaser and always get great results.
Sooo most of you are using the take the chain off method, so if you are running a shimano 10sp XT chain for example (non-SRAM Powerlink) what are you using for a quick link....
Simple Green in the park chain cleaner tool. I run the chain through twice letting the last application sit while I hand wash the rest of the bike.
Simple green too.
Or just soapy water and a chain cleaner or brushes and rags.
Hell, it's dusty Socal. If you use a dry lube, or something light like RocknRoll Gold you can probably get away with just blowing most the light dirt off with a compressor and a rag and just re-lubing.
What?....you're supposed to clean your chain? #-o
Yeah actually the more careful I am ... example using Dumond (plastic based) etc... apply sparingly...and regularly wiping down the chain... I rarely actually need to clean the chain...
Thats what i do. I don't see a reason to do more. Sonic cleaning or soaking in spirits seems like overkill. But, i buy inexpensive chains and only look to get a season out of it.
I use a wippermann connex with my shimano chain.
Wow, people sure go to great lengths for a clean chain. I use Finish Line Speed cleaner and a rag.
I'm curious about this too.
easier to clean. Just let it soak. Much faster and gets the chain cleaner than using a brush.
oh, if I recall, you can use the powerlink on shimano chains. Pretty sure Ive done it before. I could be wrong tbough. I solely use Sram nowadays.
