I was 15 minutes into a road ride yesterday, heading out of the Back Bay in Newport Beach when I collided with the ass-end of a bee. It got me right in the eyebrow. Fortunately I don't go into shock, although I usually do swell up at the site of the sting the next day. Itchy today....I guess if I decided to mtb instead, I wouldn't have a puffy eye today. I had to stay at home today and watch tv and play video games all day...what a bummer.
I know exactly what it feels like to get stung by a bee in the face area. It seems to only happen on the road and usually happens to me once a year. I hate it when they get stuck in the helmet and you try frantically to get that helmet off before you get stung. My worst bee sting was inside of my throat. Was doing intervals and was breathing hard and it flew right into my mouth as I was flying down the road at 20mph. Luckily I was 5 miles from home as within a hour my throat had almost closed up completely
I was heading down Sullivan Ridge when a bee flew right down my shirt. Normally that would be pretty shocking but it has happened to me twice before when I was on my moto. I started to slow down but because I had just switched to clipless pedals that week, I got a little off balance and went OTB right off the ridge line. Luckily I landed in some soft dirt but wouldn't you know it, the bee still stung me.
Got one right on the left side of my nose while descending at Marshall Canyon last summer. I couldn't believe how much it hurt! I swatted the bee away not knowing what stung me and a buddy had to pull the stinger out for me while I was tearing. I was lucky not to have any bad reaction since it was my first bee sting ever.
I have rear ended a bee on several occasions on the chop... fortunately open face helmet. Have a buddy that caught a WASP (reads keeps stinging until either you kill it or it flies away) under his full face on his sport bike... 6 stings before he could pull over ouch...... feel better...
The UVEX XP100 helmet has the mess in the forward vents to prevent bees and other bugs to enter. http://www.uvexsports.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=C4101272215
Got stung on my eye lid while riding at Aliso. Sucker somehow managed to get underneath my helmet visor and sunglasses.
I got you guys beat. About 8 months ago I was comming down SSDH, hit a gap jump and in mid flight a bee flew right into my mouth. It tried to sting me on my tounge but I guess the stinger wouldn't stick. When I tried to spit him out he got my lip and latched on. I couldn't get him off till I came to a screeching halt. By that time he all ready got me pretty good. My whole left side of my face and tounge was swolen for like 4-5 days. I looked like the Elephant Man.
