    9 News stated he's a regular there, walks with a cane and is paralyzed on one side if that rings a bell with anyone.

    Regular = "Frequent Flyer" ?

    He probably fell over and doesn't want his "walking priviledges" revoked.

    After the "attack", supposedly the idiot "hiker" walked out of the park and over to the gas station in front of Ralphs, and told someone at the station what happened. Evidentally this guy was embarrassed about being so stupid and was just going to go home, but whoever he told said no, this must be reported and thus notified the Parks people and media.

    This guy is incredibly stupid and lucky. Authorities, please don't tranquilize or put down the lions, put down the stupid "hiker". Seriously, in the name of gene pool purification, the human race is better off without this idiot. Especially if the guy is a local, he should know better. We were in the area and stopped by to talk to the park rangers and media for a bit, and my 9 year old daughter was in disbelief that anyone could be so stupid.

    the more I think and hear about it, the less I'm buying it.

    dude with a limp was able to walk up to lion cubs and pet them at all before they ran away? or before the mother got between them? doubtful.

    a 3 inch scratch is the only damage from a lion protecting her cubs? a single swat is all she did to protect them? BS

    Whiting will be closed the rest of the day

    I just spoke with OC Parks, they confirmed that since it is so late in the day, Whiting will be closed at least the rest of today.

    Maybe it's been mentioned (sorry - I'm at work & can't read the whole thread), but whether this story is for real or not, I think this guy ought to get billed for damages. If he’d started a fire, vandalized a sign, or smashed a fence, he’d be billed for the cost. So why not the same treatment for messing with the wildlife in a wilderness park, especially such a sensitive (endangered?) species. It's not like he can claim ignorance: There are signs all over every OC park warning about lions and telling what to do if you see one.

    I say they bill him for the cost to the county.

    Muck...how stupid can people be. Whiting just gets open and look. We have to remember, we are just visitors to their domain.

    I'm

    with you! He has got to be full of shti. First of all the cubs aren't going to sit there while he limps up to pet them and second, he would have gotten a lot more that a three inch scratch. A mountain lion could do that by accident.

    the cubs would have to be tiny to let him get that close, and they grow fast. If they were that tiny then they were near there den, and I think a lion den right next to a trail would be noticeable by more people then one jackass. The whole thing is BS I'm glad they didn't accidentally find a lion

    Had it been a mountain biker that touched the cub, the Sierra Club would already be demanding a ban on Mountain biking.
