Yea, it brings to mind Kanga's saying: "There are only two kinds of MTBers... those who've crashed hard, and those who are going to." While i'm healing, I may take up backpacking again, which will allow me to spend time up in the mountains.

I was able to ride within a couple of days with a Grade 3 shoulder separation. This injury seems like it will sideline me for awhile. :(

Gregg, it was a weird thing to hear about your crash, not long after you posted the reply above.

I hope you're not hurting too badly, and that you'll be back on your bike again soon.

This afternoon I go to an orthopedic specialist, when i'll get a cast (or whatever else they use now) and find out how long I have to stay off the bike and out of the surf.

I broke the same bone, the same way, five years ago. I was doing a collegiate DH race at Reno, hit a tree branch, and broke the 5th metacarpal (boxer's fracture).

They put me in a cast that had the forearm, hand, and last two fingers for 6 weeks.

It happened just after my first son was born. Changing a diaper and wiping poo with the three fingers sticking out of my cast was a real test of skill. Needless to say, my cast was a little smelly. 8-[

Good luck bro. These heal up nicely. Mine was spiral break (nasty) but still healed good. :bang:

Sorry to hear about that! The last couple of weeks those branches out in LWP have been troublesome. They've brought me down and others. I'm sure you'll be riding again in no time. Maybe put the Yeti on a trainer?? I'd like to see a pic of that!

It's a spiral break to the fifth metacarpal. He said it should be healed in 5 weeks. He also said that the best thing would be a couple of screws to hold the bone together, but i want to avoid surgery for a few reasons. I'm on the verge of getting a good size cabinet job at the moment (my biggest one in a dismal year, workwise)... I have to convince my client that I can still work in a timely manner.:-k

Maybe I should contact the Rads and do some trail maintenance.
Jeff Sims suggested a trainer as well. I've never used one. This is something i'll have to look into. Yes, i'll post a pic if/when it happens.:)

Art- Heal up fast. I did the same thing, Boxer's Fx, about 5yrs ago. Still bugs me today: numb knuckles and hand fatigue. I was back on the bike in less than 6 wks.
Running larger grips once your healed could help.

    RE: surgery...
my doc told me that if the two halves of the bone are close to a straight line (within 10 degrees off straight) that no surgery necessary.

If your bones are really displaced at an odd angle, it might be good to pin it.

I still have two plates and fourteen screws in my right forearm from 21 years ago... and it feels great! I can lift really heavy objects, like cars and stuff, set off metal detectors, hang personal notes on my arm with refrigerator magnets, etc

Trevor Wikre sacrifices finger to keep playing football

still think you should have just cut it off and keep riding:bang:

    excerpt below
And so he didn't even wait for the surgeon to finish speaking. "Cut it off," Wikre said. "It's just a pinkie."
Cut it off? The surgeon told him not to be dramatic. Wikre told him to lop off the dang finger already, he had a game on Saturday. The surgeon reluctantly acquiesced, allowing the surgical option because there was the possibility of arthritis and other medical complications. Wikre signed a waiver, and off came the pinkie's top two joints. "This team is too good, and there's too much love," says Wikre. "There was no way I was missing out.

First of all Art - sorry to hear about your injury. Must have hurt like a b!tch!

Second - I started a search for Google images for "pinkie" looking for a funny picture of a missing pinkie. Lo and behold I came up with something else...something that just might cheer you up a bit.

Sorry ladies. Give me a break. There's no "mens" forum.

With the luck you have been having on the bike lately you should change your name to Old Man Crashing.

this is the most offensive post I have seen on this site. And that includes politics AND religion!

Hey Art, as you know, I am sorry to hear about the hand. I was thinking that maybe you should use the time to build another bike. Nothing like a new 'big' bike to heal the wounds quickly.

    Take care.

    Thats hot...
