Why is it people respond to for sale ads more often then not ask.....

"What is the lowest you will take?"

in their 1st communication w/ you.....

I mean make a freaking offer....don't just ask what is the lowest I'd take b/c you spent the 30sec to type an email....I mean geez...I want to get as much as possible for what I'm selling....if I think your offer is too low I will either counter or just say sorry but I can't accept that little.....it's like they want me to guess at what their budget is or how much they feel they want to pay....

I actually had a guy just ask how low I will go and I responded....I'm asking for blah blah(same asking price as listing) or best offer and he responded pissed at me for not telling how low I'd go...

makes me not want to sell anything

I hear you. I have a garage full of motorcycle and bicycle stuff to sell and I keep putting off selling the stuff for this same reason. But im going to have to list, since its the only way I can get a new bike.

I never list "or best offer" or "make an offer". I put a price and that's it. If someone feels compelled to offer me something lower that I feel is reasonable, I might take it.

You could always turn the tables. When they ask how low you'll go, ask how high they'll go:)

The majority of the people looking at used stuff are cheapasses who want your stuff for nothing. If they get pissy with you feel free to educate them on how things are, or just f*ck with them a little. They'll get the message.

This is why I normally just give stuff to friends. 95+% of the time it's just not worth the BS involved in selling anything.

...And the less said about Craigslist the better. I sold a car on it and I swear that in the long run it'd been less painful just to set the damn thing on fire in the desert somewhere.

Does this mean I've been paying too much because I always paid the asking price in the Marketplace/Classified? I figure people should post what they want for something and if that item is worth that much to me, I pay it. If not, I pass. Though this does mean I miss out on items people priced a little high expecting lower offers.

I sold a rear shock on STR.

My asking price was $100. A fellow STR member was interested, but asked me if I'd part with it for $80. I agreed.

He showed up and pulled a $100 bill out of his wallet and asked if I had change!

I told him where the nearest ATM was.

A deal is a deal, and I felt I had to honor the price we agreed on. Still, the way it went down wasn't cool.

Being cheap doesn't always mean you get ahead.

    Case in point:

Several years ago, I needed something welded on my truck. I didn't know how to weld at the time, so I went to a pro. He quoted me $40, but there was a lot involved in the job and I felt his time was worth more than the original quote. I gave him $60. He was stoked and threw in an old roll-away tool box--worth waaaay more than the $20 extra I'd paid him.

Lowballer penny-pinchers never know what they've missed out on.

Not at all if someone was to make an offer then I wouldn't be irritated....its the ones who expect me to just arbitrarily lower my price to the lowest I'd expect w/o actually making an offer and the way it's worded....what is the lowest you will accept....

When I buy something if I like it but not how much they are asking...I will ask if they would accept blah amount...if they say yes....kool....if they say no I either move on or buy at their asking price....I also don't offer a ridiculously amount lower then their asking price cuz that is an insult to the seller....if their price is so far over the top for what it's worth or I'm willing to pay I just move on...

I add obo if it's negotiable(willing to accept "reasonable" offers) and FIRM if it's set in stone.....

I hate it when people try to buy your stuff and agree to a price that's not a multiple of 20.

I agreed to sell something for $50 and the guy that was buying it only had $40... good thing there was a bank in the shopping center and an In n Out.

I sold a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, that ran, for $500.00. The guy came over and was $20.00 short. He promised he would come back and give me the $20. This was over a year ago. I know he will get what he deserves.

My wife and I run a retail booth at many of the local county and State fairs and we see some real winners out there. Everyone wants to make a deal, though many don't know how.

    "How much for the keychain?"
    "$3."
"Can you give me 3 for $10?"
    "Sure...."

i think its actually rather nice of people to ask "whats the lowest you'll take" ....instead of making some asswipe lowball offer right off the back.
at least they are giving you a chance to set the bar.

if you dont like 'negotiating' then you probably shouldnt be selling sh!t, just give it away next time...that'll solve your problem.
