    Saul Raisin

Saul Raisin's story is great. Although, he didn't have part of his brain removed, it just left a big dented spot that looks like some of it was removed.

There is a great interview with him on the Competitor's Radio show. http://www.competitorradio.com/details.php?show=163

He talks about the accident and his recovery. It's pretty amazing how he started to recover and completely blew everyone's expectations out of the water.

And, speaking personally to the helmet issue, I went over the bars and broke my collarbone into four pieces. My helmet was cracked. I don't want to think about whe might have happened to my head/brain without it.

Do what YOU want, but I'll be wearing my helmet.

    You're a dope if you don't...

A few years back I was in SF, downtown, on foot and just chillin'. It was just bustling with tons of traffic of all sorts. I remember making eye contact with this kind of squirrely Middle Eastern looking guy on a ten speed and I got this strange feeling that he was going to wad it up although nothing suggested it really.

He got about 100 yards down the road and ended up running into the front of a car and blowing over the bars and into the street on the other side of the car.

Dude wasn't wearing a helmet. He ended up kind of bloody, but was ultimately okay. Scared the crap out of me to see that happen. It seemed to unfold in slow motion. I have actually had bad dreams about being in the situation for years (almost got hit when I was little).

Even still I sometimes neglect to wear a helmet when just riding around town. After reading this thread, I think I will be a bit more diligent about putting on my lid no matter what. People are crazy out there and sh!t just seems to happen!

Be safe, but maybe just a little nuts, too.

Went to El Moro after work and watched 3 young guys (late teens?), no helmets, come screaming down mach one onto the cyn trail, skidding around the corner and not even hesitating to see if anyone was coming from either direction on foot or bike. Well, I was as was the group of walkers behind me and they seemed a bit surprised but then again not really seeming to care and only one of them even acknowledged me.

Another guy, again no helmet, then came flying down into the cyn just below Slow n Easy and it was obvious that I surprised him a bit.

Helmet or no, c'mon, there's nothing wrong with using common sense.
    *rolling my eyes!*

i'm thinking sand on nearly polished concrete is only slightly less safe than riding on wet steel plates/man hole covers...just keep your speed up and don't make any sudden maneuvers :) And yes, i rode thru venice beach quite a bit

I once heard a story about a guy walking along the boardwalk at the beach. You see, he slipped on some sand and landed on his head. This in turn caused major brain damage and he spent his remaining days in a coma.

I think everyone should wear a helmet all of the time. Hopefully we can get some legislation passed that will force this issue. Of course the punishment for failing to comply should be stiff, maybe even death. Living without a helmet will not be tolerated!

I'd be a veggie right now if it weren't for my first helmet. I still remember it, a red Bell Adrenaline. I got stalled when my front wheel hit a rock, and down I went, down the embankment that is.

Besides, some helmets, like the flux, actually look cool.

My little brother josh cracked his noggin good. I rode skateboards more than half my life ( now to old and brittle) and switched to mountain bikes. My brother split his head from ear to ear,( skating without a helmet) spent 3 months in a comma, physical therapy and relearning basic functions of life up to this day. We all have a choice, however when you dont wear a helmet you also risk head injury to those who care about you!! Just something to think about.
