    The latest from Aliso Woods....

Ranger Ed passed on the following: They will start and finish blading in the park this week. That means that big hole at the park's entrance will be filled. The bridges will be rebuilt. They have all the specs for them so they don't have to go through the time consuming permitting process again. This time Ed says they are going to anchor one side with wire so the next time the water rises and tries to take the bridge out, it will just pivot to the side.

They are getting an ernormous amount of water run off now due to all the house tracts that surround the park. In the past (before the streets were put in) the water was absorbed in the ground... now with all the concret surrounding the park, the water runs off into the canyons... bummer... as it's reshaping areas in the park... although we get new trails to ride.

Lastly, FEMA is due to put in a connector road this year between the main canyon fire road and Mathis. They need to be able to get emergency vehicloes up Mathis instead of having to go around. They will be cutting back into the existing hillside that holds the trail we widened this past weekend.

They are really appreciative of all the trail work done by the volunteers in the park...Aliso Woods is the first county park to open (yea!):clap::clap: through this effort....

I dont suppose they will allow John Q. Public in to assist in the rehab, as I think they used mostly county workers to fix it after the fires. But I sure would like to help. Seeing as I have left plenty of blood and skin in that park, I feel almost related.

Whiting used a county grant so they had to use county workers for most of the work after the fires, but some of us are registered OC Parks volunteers and have done some of it. They will allow the public to help. You sign in on a 1 time volunteer sheet at the start of the work. Keep an eye out on this thread and in the trail head and calendar for trail work dates. There is 1 in San Clemente this Sat. http://www.socaltrailriders.org/for...ork-san-clemente-single-tracks-1-22-11-a.html

Here are some pics of this mornings ride with OMR:

Wood Canyon had lots of ruts and washout hazards

Gene's right, Car Wreck is in GREAT shape... the dirt in AW is tacky and fast... Ride it now, before it's all gone!

PS: They're bringing a tractor in this Friday to blade the main road.

Wood Canyon... not rideable this A.M.

For those of you thinking wood canyon might be ridedable this morning it is not. I am here right now and I made it 30-40 feet before realizing that I was starting to sink and my tires began to cake up a little bit. If you were planning a ride here you should save yourself the trip and save our trails in the process.

Aliso woods construction - be advised...

Ranger Ed at Aliso Woods has asked that I post that the Mathis Canyon Trail closure that is currently in effect between Nature Loop (this is the benched single track link) and short of the Dripping Cave trail exit. This is due to heavy equipment combined with hand-crews working to restore the link to its prior condition ... proceeding the JAN 05 storms.

People, this means that they are putting a road to Mathis from the main canyon trail (Wood Canyon Trail) back in with Federal funds. This will enable them to get emergency vehicles (including fire trucks) back up Mathis in case of fire or accidents. It behooves all users (riders included) to stay out of this area to allow the construction crews to work without
interference and not to delay the fire-road installation and trail re-opening. This area has been altered and the trail surfaces are loose, dusty and fragile. Please respect this link closure...even after the work crews go home.

NOTE: for access to Mathis from Wood Canyon use Dripping Cave Trail. Construction is expected to run into July with an opening of the link 7/17/2011

Until 7/17? Hard to understand what's going to take so long. Are they building an extension of the toll road?

I'm betting so. I believe they're also working on zoning and permitting to build houses along Mathis as well, hence the need for roads. Either that, or they're building another strip center with a Starbucks, Panera Bread, Chipotle, Target, etc. I mean really, there aren't roads in other areas of wilderness where fire equipment may need to get to. I know, I know...Aliso Woods is no longer truly a wilderness area. It's a park. Perhaps they're building a picnic area with jungle jim for the kids and a gazebo? I think they also need to get the concrete mixers in their to resurface the trails. Perhaps they're laying in an escalator up Mathis to make it easier to hike up Mathis?
