Other than the charity factor, it's about the ugliest, effin bike I have ever seen. Obviously some folks taste is all in their mouth. I must admit, seeing folks go gaga over some artists self hyped "genius" does make me smile. Hell, if I can get $10-20 for my autograph on Ebay, anything is possible. <snicker>
Uhhh....its called art...and was commissioned to as a way to raise money at auction from those who generally support museums and similar things. ........and its not like its a Mapplethorpe or an image that somebody might object to on better grounds than "taste".
yup art that silly little thing.. ugly to some beautiful to others...and that bike raised 500k for charity is awesome
Don't care if it's the best looking bike in the world but for 500k towards charity, then I am all for it. Plus it's a bike so I guess i'll cut it some slack
He used real butterflies. The only skills used were knowing how to glue stuff together and apply clear coat. Many people here could have done it.
The Hirst bike must've been purchased by someone in LA, because it was at Helen's Santa Monica being put it together yesterday.
I love art. I'm an artist myself - but sometimes the stuff that is passed as art is questionable and makes me wonder if the artist in question is aware that some people, or sycophants with too much money and a desire to be "in", will go nuts over something that looks like a broken appliance. A person could crap in their hand, smear on canvas, give it a name and conceptual basis and some bonehead will still buy it. Did anyone see BMW's Expression of Joy art/ad campaign?
Being over the top IS the point. If you look at Hirst's other works you'll know that he is making fun of extravagance and what society perceives as value. Sure it seems to surpass mere mockery but that is also kind of the point. This isn't a bike to be ridden, although if you did that would be funny in its own way. Using real animals in artwork is cruel and douchey. Other than that it's great.
First of all I think the bike is bad ass and well worth the money. Second, for those of you that are not familiar with Hirst's work: "For the Love of God" £50 million!
Excellent example Well done! I really enjoy some of the BMW art cars from way back then. Although i do agree that this bike was done.. ummm.. differently, I appreciate the idea behind it. Not to mention that some of the other designs are awesome.
If you can afford to give to charity and from the donation receive something of "value", that's great. 500k is a lot of $ to us mortals. I expect to see this out at Food Park or Como in the near future. The dead butterflies, that's creepy.
yea this is kinda old news but still sweet stuff...lance posted this on his twitter a few weeks back... 1:21 my fav http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoIQdIsqd3Y
