As my name says it, I am not a small guy. I have legs like tree trunks.

I bought the Kona Hey Hey 29er early last year. After I blew 2 Shimano hubs, I got a new set of wheels with Hope Pro II, within 3 months, it too gave up. It happened twice going up San Juan, lucky it was downhill back to the car.

Yesterday, I rode in Aliso Woods with my Moment, which has a 2 years old Hope. while going up the short steep section on Coyote, I heard a big crack, the hub casing just split open.

It will more than likely be covered by Hope, but I am thinking about looking for a new hub. Probably a Chris King. Are they stronger?

I know they have a better engagement than the Hope. But it does not really matter to me. My only concern is that it last with the high torque of a 275lb guy.

would recommend DT-Swiss 370s or 440s. Or a set of Hadleys.

CK, or the DTs mentioned above. Stay away from Quick Release, with your weight you should be using 10mm ThruBolt/Axle at a minimum.

I updated my Hope to a 10mm axle on the Hey Hey and it did make it stiffer, it was deflecting so much than my tire was rubbing on the seat stay on the right side.

I would love to see how much lb/foot I generate :-k

As I am doing some research, I am tempted by the ringdrive design of the CK, they brag that it is capable of handling a torque load of over 800ft/lbs...

you sure it wasnt your rim/spokes deflecting? I doubt the hub was moving that much to cause the tire to hit the frame.

How about a DT Swiss 540 Tandem Hub.

Riding a tandem is double the fun, but the shared enjoyment of a tandem means double the load for the hubs as well. The 540 tandem hubs are built extra strong to handle that extra load.

I am a big fan of hadley hubs and they have the 72pt option and the 10mm option. That being said the DT will probably handle the highest torque of any hub on the market but i have never seen a broken hadley and they are locally made in upland so parts are easy to get. The hadley hubs also have a 20mm axle inside every hub and the freehub rides on a set of needle bearings. All good things.

The frame is very stiff.I had a new wheel built at the Path, I suspected the skewer as the weakest link. But it is all connected and everything flex at different level. I covered the rub area with nail polish and have not seen any rub since.

I saw you coming up that section of Coyote with your broken Hope (double entendre intended). I was going the other direction. Get a DH hub like a DT Swiss 440 with as big a thru bolt as your bike can handle. Good luck.

Hadley is a great hub. But you need to get back to this Serge. This was taken in October 2004. ;)

Negative on the 370's, they are the same as Cerit's, a 2 pawl system. Try the 340's or 440 Freerides and make sure the rear is the model with the 10mm through axle and 15mm bearings and hub, in the 340 model.

I'm at 240 pounds wet, and both Hadleys and DTSwiss 440 Freerides have held up to my climbing and weight.

I'd also suggest you mash less and spin more on your hubs, if you want the pawls /stars to last in your hub and bearings.
