So I'm going to convert my 3x10 drivetrain to a 2x10 setup. Do I need to get a new front derailleur for this will my current one work? I'm concerned as my current derailleur was designed for the 3 ring crank, but have heard various reports that I can make it work by adjusting the limit screws. Thoughts?
Some shifters (like M980) feature a mode selector for 2 or 3 ring options. Reference the instruction for yours if possible.
You'll never look back! Are you using your existing small and middle chainrings? Limit the screw on your fd to go just beyond center of the chainring and I've found on EVERY bike I've converted to leave the shifter in the 3x mode! Let the limiting screw on the FD limit the shifter movement. Its MUCH crisper shifting... (I'm sure someone will disagree) It just works better. Welcome to the 2x10 club!
I have a 2009 XT 3-ring crankset. Removed the outer ring, installed a 36t Race Face "middle" ring and a 24t Race Face small ring. Used the limiter screw to make it a two-position shifter. Later I switched to a ten spd rear derailleur (XTR Shadow Plus), cassette, chain and right shift lever. This setup works amazingly!!! For a 26" full suspension bike, the gear ratios are perfect! The clutch on the derailleur eliminated the need or desire for a chain tensioner/guide. Welcome to 2x10 - you will never go back. Enjoy :bang:
Keep the Front shifter in 3x mode. The reasoning for the 2x mode is a true 2x crankset has slightly different spacing. As all the others said just adjust the limit screws.
Have fun. Looking into this setup options for next build. 2x by removing the large chainring on a 3x crank = still use the 3x mode and adjust down the H limiter. 2x by starting off with a dedicated 2x crank = use the 2x mode on shifter, if necessary.
So today I did a ride and as a 2x demo did not use my big chainring. In short, it was the best ride I've ever had. I'm sold. Now I'll remove the big ring, add a bashguard in its place and shorten the chain ever so slightly. I'm a very happy 2x10 convert. Thanks for the feedback and advice guys!
Not sure what rings you have up front, but if you have a shimano triple you might consider changing the rings so you have more of a spread in gears.
Better chainline, better performance, slightly lighter, use any gear combo, chain lasts longer... With the right front combo, you lose out on nothing.
Yeah, so I was doing the convention today. Took off the 42T ring and put on a bash guard and replaced my 32T with a 36T. This is when I ran not a problem. With the 36T when I shift down, the chain gets jammed against the frame. Anyone know of a fix or am I screwed? Photos below...
