So what is on tap for next weekend? I would like to do 7-8kft and if possible and work going up Baldy road? But everything I work in gets me way over that elevation gain. What about starting at the claremmont Wilderness to 39 to baldy village and back, anyone know what the elevation gain is?

without using pedometer, i would guess that to be about 5-6k ft gain. i have done gmr to baldy village starting in upland several times and its (only, haha) about 4700 ft. 39 to village probably not much different. good loop though.

I will probabely do some varation of that loop come sunday (satruday is supposed to be raining). Anyone intrested in joining. Probabely up 39 or GMR and try to get to icehosue canyon parking and then down baldy. I live at the 210/15 interchange so it will be a few more miles/feet for me.

Lesser mortal preride 45 mile, Jack Rabbit --> Oak Glen Loop

Leaving my house in Lake Forest, Tue Feb 15 at 8:00am.

I can take 1 or 2 more in my car. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Drive to the start of Oak Glen climb --> do it out and back
if sufficient time remains: drive to bottom of Jack Rabbit --> ride up and down it.

Loren, I was thinking along the same lines as you. I've already got a couple friends who only want to do the GMR/GRR section but I was thinking of maybe an early start going up 39 to East Fork, to GRR/ to Cow Saddle to the picnic area up the switchbacks. Should put us over 8500' for the day. Weather might be a factor though. I'm going to wait until later in the week before I commit to anything though.

I would love to hit oak glen again and maybe go to AF but I think I will wait a month.
FYI Grant, Wild Wood Canyon to Oak Glen is also a great climb if you want to skip jack rabbit.

PainFreak, I am not familar with cow saddle / pinic graound? Is that just about the Icehouse parking lot near the dog woods?
I will get a map together for the specifics.

Oak Glen was not too bad, better than I expected. Also my 39x27 gearing seems to be sufficient.

Jack Rabbit is a little unusual surface but not to hard to find an acceptable line through the broken surface. It was more stressful coming down Jack Rabbit after climbing it.

You guys keep me in the loop on this one. Might be pretty cold up past the village and snow is expected in the next couple days. Who knows the weather(person) could be wrong

    Weather as of today was:
Snow level dropping to 4000 ft on Wednesday night but nothing mentioned of the snow level elevation on Sunday. Sundays temps in the moutains are supposed to be in the low 40s (wind chill down to 32 and below). Only a 20% chance of snow on Sunday.

I guess the big concern would be ice patches right before the decent into the village and anything that might be on Baldy after the post ofice.

GRR has quite a few north facing sections that can hold snow/ice for some time after a storm. Also don't forget about increased ski traffic clogging up the roads. Might be a good weekend for a long dirt climb a la San Sevaine, Sunset Ridge, Alder Creek, etc.

Jeff do you have a map for that? I have been off my mtn bike since i realzied how old it was (outdated) :(

Here is the route I had in mind for road riding. You can add 1000ft if you go all the way up euclid to shin road and down baldy. It is 92 miles with 7300 ft.

Well the weather reports says for Sunday, AM showers in the foothills and snow in the mountains. I guess we will have to play it by ear. If anyone is intrested in riding on Sunday I will try to post yah or nay Saturday night.

Yeah, I'm with you Jeff. I'm pulling out the mtb for some dirt miles, see you at Sycamore. I still might ride on streets (club ride) if rain isn't to bad on Saturday but I'm not going into the mountains.

I'll be riding local fire roads on the mtb this weekend. I can ride a few minutes from my house to a series of 5-7 mile dirt climbs that are all sandstone and shale so very little mud.

MTB weekend here too. racing Fontana on saturday, then heading down to SD on sunday to pre ride sage brush coarse.

weekend of March 19-20 looking good for a final long distance sufferfest before KOM starts in april. hopefully that will allow enough time for temps to rise enough tha we can return to the mountains.

    Next training ride:
Extended forcast shows shoers starting on Friday and lasting till Tuesday. Any suggestison as to where we can get some hill climbing in on the road...the only thought that I can think of is Palm Springs tram road as everything else will be wet. Are ther any mountain roads we can ride that will be dry? We could always ride in the rain but that is no fun.
