while im stoked they finally got him something he liked, im also bummed at the overall scenario. it reminds me of the nba, nfl and mlb. -___-

his playoff play last season was pretty lackluster, and he took quite a few stupid penalties.

im not good at putting functions together, does anyone want to take the lead role and manage our Nov. 17th outing?

They definitely overpaid based on what he has done so far, BUT, only time will tell if they got a "deal" on him. He still isn't the highest paid defenseman in the league, but he COULD very well BE the best defenseman in the league in a couple years.

I agree Brett, it does sound a lot like the other sports. It's funny to me that $25,000 for a day of "work" wasn't enough for him.

Doughty did NOT earn that huge contract!

Doughty is NOT the 2nd or 3rd best defenseman in the league!

Compare Doughty's 2010/11 stats to other NHL defenseman...
(the numbers don't lie... he was not elite)

Doughty does NOT deserve to be paid more than Kopitar!

The extra 2 (or 3) million they OVERpaid for Doughty per year = money they do NOT for other players!
(plenty of very talented / underpaid young players in this league... Players want to play for the Kings... They want to live in Manhattan Beach)

    Huuuuge salary cap hit!
If he gets hurt... The Kings will be forced to 1) activate a minor league kid 2) they may be forced to trade a roster player for a capable replacement (not much trade bait on the kings roster)

I saw enough games last year (live and on TV) to know.. THEY OVERPAID!

Eight year contract? His jersey number is eight!
    (interesting)

The Kings were in a bind... They did not want to lose him. They overpaid. If they Kings fail to take it to the next level, this contract will be partly to blame.

I hope he proves his worth. I hope he has a MVP caliber year. I hope he helps the Kings reach the promise land!

The Kings are hoping with a lot of money at stake. Doughty didn't really earn that type of money from the way he played last year, in my opinion.

It kills me to see these athletes earn(?) these types of contracts. The economy is in shambles and they still get paid millions. If only I could convince my boss that I was really worth more money to the company.....a lot more.

    I agree with everything said.
Especially this: Doughty does NOT deserve to be paid more than Kopitar!

I'm kind of OK with the signing though.
I'm glad the distraction is over, I'm glad they have him wrapped up for many years, and I'm glad they actually have spent money.
I tend to think he had his sophomore slump a year late, and will be fine.
Per EJ McGuire, NHL Director of Scouting: Doughty is "a defenseman around which a team is going to build the next 10 years."
    Should be a fun season.

Sounds like Penner has a "lower body injury" and now may not play on Friday, I guess that means Parse on the first like with Kopitar and Williams. Is Voynov going back to Manchester or is he going to bolt for the KHL? Can't wait for the season to start! GKG!
