Really! Apparently I will be staying with my 5 arm square taper rings that I pay $15-30 for from Middleburn and the now cheap 9 speed cassettes.

I purchased SRAM XX1 crank and XO Type 2 Medium rear derailleur. The installation was simple and the setup works fantastic and is much less than buying the whole XX1 group. Installed it on my Scott Scale 29er and lost 13oz of weight.

Short cage? Your going to have issues. If its Shimano XT, it's not short cage is Med cage really. Short cage will only work with 1x10, and Shimano only makes them in DH level parts.

I'm running a short cage SRAM derailleur on my 1x10 (XC not DH). No issues so far.

I have been running a 1x10 with a 34 front and 11-36 rear for a couple of years now. All XT components with a meduim cage deraileur and it works great. Also ran a long cage for a bit and that worked fine as well.

The only reason that you would have to you would have to change the cranks that I know of is that if you are not already running Sram cranks with the replaceable spider. The reason is the XX1 chain rings have a different bolt pattern than standard chain rings and the teeth are cut differently than a standard chainring. The only thing that I can tell that is interchangeable with a 9-10spd from the XX1 system is the cranks/chainring but that's okay. The chainring is the heart of the XX1 system and without it, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. If you actually want to convert to the full XX1 system though, you'll need to buy more than just cranks. You'll have to buy shifters, cranks, derailleur, cassette and new rear wheel since none of it interchangeable with a 10spd. Also, an 11-42 does not exist in a 10spd. If you want to run that range of gears you'll have to convert to XX1.

Awe, come on.. Give us some more info. Are you running that on a 9spd 10spd or an 11spd? What size is the chain ring? What's the range of the cassette? Are you running a 10spd chain? Pics?
