My XT cranks are a couple of years old now, but I've never had problems. I have many friends who use the newer XT stuff and it seems Shimano just keeps fine tuning their stuff year after year. Yeah, Shimano stuff is common and you see it everywhere, but there is a reason for that.

    quit being a wanker......

cranks. They are strong and turn your chainrings... propelling you fwd.

get over it. They were cheaper than saints, and plenty burly

I've found both sets of saints that I have for less than you're paying for XTs. sure, they're used, but most people around here aren't doing the kind of thing that can break saints...

You can't beat XT cranks for the price, quality, and durability.

It's interesting that you guys bring up the saints. Have you guys taken a look at both of them closely? The only difference that I can find is the actual arm itself. The spline interface and the axle itself is identical to the XT's. The BB bearings are the same other than color. So what use is the burly arm when the actual axle(load bearing mechanism) is the same material and thikness?

I've owned both and just can't seem to justify 400 extra grams for the sake of having stronger arms. Unless you guys are planning on grinding at a skate park.

    just my 2 cents.

The BB on the cranks was never the problem, it when you bail a jump or slam a rock and bend/crack an arm

I don't think either chewy or duke777 have any aspirations to be doing those types of tricks with their bikes....:-k

I run Atlas cranks on one of my bikes. They have been pretty good up to now (about 2 years of use) I hve changed the bb once but have ridden the bike a lot. I have also had the crank bolt work loose once after 18 months of use.
All in all I like Race Face products a lot.
I also run shimano Saint cranks on another bike and they have also been pretty reliable.
If I were to compare Race Face chainring quality with Shimano´s, I would say that RF last longer and don´t have the issues with which PCD to buy, as Shimano seem to have a few to choose from.

I do believe that the spindle is steel on the saints, as well as stiffer arms, steel pedal inserts, and a beefed up spider from what I remember. also, the interface has never worried me. both ends are splined, and the non-drive is very robust. I ran without pinchbolts one day (accidentally) on my saints, and they handles it with aplomb. I'm betting that would have screwed my XTs a bit (less material around the pinch area).

yeah, they aren't for everyone, but I like being confident that my equipment is pretty much indestructible within my skills (as in, I'll hurt myself severely before I break them).

and like I said, there's next to no loss in maneuverability from heavy cranks, so I don't mind adding some weight there for peace of mind.

Just the last time I checked, there was no difference in material on the spindle. Unless you have a saint crank that's "special".

I recall a discussion about hone vs XT cranks at one point, and the differences included a steel spindle, and steel inserts (depending on model of hones). I don't see why shimano would have a steel spindle for hones, and not their super-strong flagship crank (saints) :?:

whatever. sorry for derailing the thread, back to the topic at hand. go XT or SLX and be happy :bang:

I'd like to hear other peoples opinions on 170mm vs 175mm crank arms, and how many teeth are best for each ring.

    Thanks.
