So I've been trying to find a local MTB team to join but haven't really found anything in the SD area....

There seems to be lots of options up in OC and LA but SD (and who blames them as there really aren't enough races down here)

So maybe instead of trying to find a team I could try and find training partners.

So here it is I'm a sport XC rider trying to get better and move up to expert (I can do the distance its the speed that is an issue) Looking for people looking to meet 1-2 times a week religously for advanced paced rides with lots of climbing. Trick here is in SD... PQ, Mission trails, Sycamore pref. 1 week night and maybe a long weekend am....

    Anyone out there?

Not sure about a riding partner, but Team Sho-Air is a large team and even does partial race reimbursement at the end of the season. They are large enough that you may be able to find someone to train with.

+1 on Team Shoair (OK +1,000,000 on team Shoair). Besides riding partners, they do ride in southern OC so, while not SD area specifically , they may be close enough. Shoot an email out to the MTB Team Captian (caroline). Tell her Vlad and Clint suggested she might know of any team members riding in your area in SD. You can get her email at the Team's website at www.teamvelosport.com

    Look up Caroline's email at:

    Hmmmm....

    I think I might know a guy.

    ME!

I'm in La Jolla and I ride a few times a week. I race Cat 1 XC and Xterra. Someone to ride with would be cool.

There are tons of group road rides, both during the week and on the weekend. My suggestion would be to train on the road with a group, and alone on the mountain bike.

Yea maybe I'll talk to them more, it would just be tough traveling 2+ hrs ea way for training rides ect ect.

Zippy, I could def use the ass kicking but I'm aspiring for CAT 1 and won't wanna hold you up. PM me sometime when you plan on riding we'll see how much slower I am :) I know riding with you would help me (riding with faster people is always a good thing) but not sure it you'd see any benifit of me hanging on you wheel :-k

    PM your email/his email

PM me your info/ride info Temecula could work.

Sounds like we are working toward similar goals maybe we could join up with Zippy and he could kick both our asses :) PM me oh and if you want info on the CU Boulder cycling team I can help there also I have a buddy who is a CAT 2 roadie/MTBer that works @ CU.

Thanks for the info people, keep it coming if all goes well we can get a pretty good group together and push each other to be faster :bang:

careful... STR has a way of harassing those that identify themselves as "fast" or "racers". :)

you are more than welcome to join in on an occasional ride with Allison and I. we don't claim to be the fastest around... but we train pretty hard.

thursday nights we are usually out at vail doing a pretty fast training ride with intervals on the climbs and recovery on the descents.

we do a ton of training on the road bikes, for example this weekend we will be doing one day on the road and one on the dirt.

we don't belong to "Sho Air... the team that is taking over the Galaxy" but they are a great bunch of folks! Allison and I really wanted to get into a nice friendly team atmosphere, but it hasn't happened for us yet. we just wind up training and racing on our own... if you have some Sho Air riders around you i would put them way up on the list of people to join up with.

late edit: if you are really serious about your training you may find that it is best to do it almost entirely by yourself. i often scrub part of my workout because allison is a tad slower than me. i am pretty sure most of the big dogs train alone.

Thanks yea I hear you on training solo and I do train solo a bit but it would be nice to have someone close in ability to meet up with and push each other.

am I fast??? no not compared to many others, but I'm not getting the workouts I need out of local group rides ect ect.

I'd really love to get up to vail lake some thursday and do hill intervals, even if I get dropped it will get me out there and give me a goal ya know! tough to get all the way up there on a week day though. we'll see thanks so much for the invite!

whybother has it right, at least thats the way I see it. When you are doing intervals via hill climbs, sprints etc it is somehow better done alone. Once a week do a group ride if you can and then you can do mini races etc. against others to get the adrneline pumping. Even doing recovery rides are hard with some one else because one of the 2 in a group will start going harder than the other and before you know it you are no longer doing a recovery ride.

I'm up for some training rides if you're ever in the North County. I usually ride during the day because I work from home and it's easier to get out in the middle of the day. But, I could try to make some afternoon or weekend rides if you or some other riders set up a ride. My normal routes are at Calavera, La Costa and sometimes Daley or LPQ (I hit LPQ if I go into the office in Sorrento Valley).

Our times at the last Vail race where only 30 seconds off so our riding ability is probably pretty close (I was riding Sport SS).

OK guys I'm thinking of setting up a training ride for next sunday afternoon (3/29). PM me you email addresses and I'll get everyone on the same page. I'm thinking climbing work on La Costa, hammer the climb and see how your legs feel on the tech decent of NASCAR..... regroup and hit it again. Its a start we can talk more and figure out what everyone is into and a good spot to meet in the future.
