Dammit I got stuck up in Marshall Canyon yesterday when the light went away lol. Didn't realiize that it's getting dark much sooner, so not fun. Should probably invest in a light if I want to keep this up, don't want to spend much though so what's everyone's take?

The clone is pretty bright and works good but is more of a spot light vs Flood
You can buy a filter for them and they work good

http://mtbl.robs-x.com/

I run a magicshine on my bars and a 300 lumens flashlight flood on the helmet so i can see where i look
Also dont forget to grab a red blinking light for the back so people, bikes or cars can spot ya

You do understand the rotation of the Earth around the Sun don't you?... There's an App for that.

yeah, i've actually bought a couple of these but they are pretty narrow beam, I think for a geoman clone I would go with these

^^ And the tilt of the earth's axis with regards to the sun. But you knew that. : )

^^ and the global layer in the ozone warming hole letting in more blue light and tides rising higher to cover the sun sooner...

I hear the sun sets later for those in BC around this time of year. Time to migrate north?

Shhhhhh........don't talk about it. As long as we don't acknowledge it, then we can deny it.......at least for a little longer.

Um couple things. Talk watts not lumens, nobody is honest about lumens. It is time for the vernal equinox 12 hrs daylight in each hemisphere. Yes, get some lights. No red lights required when running grass burners.

Night ride hints: separate your lights, in a vein attempt to gain depth. If you ride with a group, the helmet light will illuminate the dust like having your high beams on in the fog. The lines change in the dark go with it. I cut my torches when I pass another rider, even if I just cover them with my hand. Watch your head, your lights do not illuminate overhead branches. Hikers, you always end up finding a hiker now and then in the dark, lost and so happy to see you. Always carry a backup flashlight, I have never used it, but offer it to the lost hikers. Practice brail riding every so often. You will remember this when your out there in the dark some night.
Happy trails, we own the night

witchcraft heresy, the world is flat and the sun rotates around the earth, so day light duration always remains a constant.

can i get away with just a handlebar light?

Yes you can. You lose light when you look towards a turn that is sharp like a 90* or a switchback, but it is only in a short instant. You probably shouldn't be riding too fast in the dark anyway. Ideally you want 2 lights, but is totally unnecessary.

Yes i 2nd the helmet light as well as handlebar it helps alot. I have a niterider pro 3600 and lumina 650. The lumina is awesome you really dont need any other light its bright enough.

I'm just waiting for decent night vision goggles with dept perception to come into consumer price ranges. Just think of all the covert night trail poaching! (insert hand-wringing emoticon)

I like two lights because inherently one will eventually fail. I've been on enough group rides where I've given someone one of my lights or seen enough guys trying to sniff their way down a trail in the dark with a failed light that I pretty much always carry two.

RydeMTB28- Welcome! But...

1. We can't post about poach trails.

2. Lizard trail is in Laguna Coast.

3. Laguna Coast is closed at night.

Thanks!

Edit: Not trying to be the e-police, just clueing you in to the rules of STR and the "code" for mtb posting (haven't you seen Fight Club?).
Way to make friends with your 2nd post...

You also lose light going over tall rocks, stumps, large log rolls, jumps, ramps, or anything else that goes up a few feet and then sharply down.

If going with one light, I'd rather have a helmet than handlebar light, since the shadows that the handlebar light casts are annoying, sometimes for the rider in front of you as well, if you ride with a group. Just going with a helmet light helps "to train you" to look further ahead too, rather than in a spot a few feet ahead of your wheels.

Maybe you should've grabbed that Light and Motion Seca 1400 that the Path ran a deal on earlier, if you were interested in doing some night rights. People who use that in the forest areas say they see better with it than when the sun is out. That light is a serious enabler. With cheap lights, people can find themselves "out-running" the lights--the cheap lights don't provide enough usable light to provide the detail you need to confidently ride fast and make split second decisions and reactions and forces them to go slow enough to provide ample time to react to things.

I have one of those newer Magicshine/GeomanGear lights. It has an overheat problem where it shuts down to its middle brightness setting after a while. When that happens, you better rely on your memory of the trail to get you through sections. I use that as a cue that I'm not going fast enough and go all out and hope it turns back on to high as the air flow over it cools it down (which is kind of dangerous, as the middle setting is easily outrun).

dirtvert police- Thank's, But...

1. Sorry to get your panties in a bunch i took the video off.

2. Yes, it is.

3. Indeed, but when you get a flat on the trail and the sun is set its smart to bring your light with you so you can get back to your car safely.

Your Welcome!
