UPDATE X-ray as of 7-27-09. Two screws. One is right behind the other in the pic. In terms you bike geeks can relate to, the screws are 3.7mm x 60mm. And finally got the stupid plaster cast off today. That thing was totally ghey. At least the inflate-a-boot looks cool! 2.5 more weeks and I can start to put weight on it. 6 weeks or less of PT and I can put my ass back on a bike!!! Took a few days off for the 4th. Went up to our place at Lake Arrowhead. Last night I took an evening wakeboard run. Did a short wake to wake bunny hop, came down and caught the toeside of the board on the wake pushing my toes toward my shin while the body weight pushes down on the heel. Heel bone gave way before the achilles did and broke the left heel bone. Felt it snap. Yuck! In the E.R. "on a scale of 1-10 how does it feel." A "12." Shaking violently because of the pain the whole time. I didn't know that happens, do now though. I friggin lost it on the x-ray table from trying to get it in place for an x-ray. I have no shame in telling you that it brought me to tears. 3 months off at best. The specialist today said it was a clean break so no surgery! Doc kept the x-ray cd but I'll have the pics next week. Never broken a bone in my 44 years, doc says "you picked a hell of a one to start with!" Even with Percocet it's still a 6-7 that's why I'm up posting.
take it easy, find some good mags & eat lots of good food. you can worry about working it off after your 3 mths is up! feel better soon!
Dayum. Part of why I gave up being towed in water decades ago. Take it easy and eat plenty of pain killers.
Wow,sorry to hear that Jeff. I guess we won't be riding together anytime soon.Let me know if there's anything I can do or get for you while you're down.If you need it I'll pm you my phone #.-Lloyd
He was injured wakeboarding, not biking. However,if you ride mtb's your time is coming. It's not a matter if you crash, but when.#-o-Lloyd
Oh CRAP!! That sounds painfull!!!! Relax and dont do anything doesnt sound like a fun one to rebreak!!#-o
More pain than I have ever experienced in my life. Did finally get a few hours of dope sleep so that helps. Hey Lloyd, we can "bench race" and drink beers in the garage! Thanks for the support, it helps!
Crappy way to start the holiday weekend! I'm still healing from my hand break Mem Day weekend; heal up, man!
Sorry to hear. Maybe I should keep your new FXR in shape for you. We wouldn't want it to deteriorate from non-use no would we. Heel  quick.
Wow. It hurt just reading your post. I couldn't imagine that much pain. 3 months will go by fast.
Ouch, hope you feel better man. Did you go to the hospital in Arrowhead? I went there when I broke my elbow rock climbing at Keller Peak. Then I had to go straight to Loma Linda for surgery. Not cool...
Mountains Community it was. Typical emergency room full of misfits and folks that really had no business being there.
OUCH!!!! I broke my heel bone as well back in 1984. Worst pain I ever had in my life by far - shattered it during a bmx jumping contest at a local track filmed by a cable tv channel. Wish I had the 'footage' to see where I went wrong. Basically overshot a huge tabletop jump and came down from about 10 feet up with only one foot on the pedal... Felt it 'explode' upon impact.. Doc just put me in a soft cast (see: ace bandage) for 6/8 weeks or so. Still killed me every time I'd bump it into something. I also didn't rehab it correctly, tried riding my bike with one leg always smacking it on the ground and so my arch fell and now I have one flat foot with probably 25% less mobility that the other. Definitely get orthotic shoes or inserts if the doc says so - learn from my mistake. Happy healing and hope you're back in action asap. Donny
Hope it heals quick. I never broke a heel, but bruised it many times skating and it hurts like all hell. Instead, I just broke my ankle, 4th and 5th metacarpal and torn ligaments 5 times in total. I have a limited range of motion now. Let it heal proper, I never did and had to give up skating ( well kinda, I still do it AMA). Here is to a speedy recovery:beer:
