Beginner trails do not tend to have drops on them. The best thing to do is find a group of riders who are into that kind of thing, and learn from them.

Bender charges hard, and is worthy of respect. He's inspired countless riders (including myself) to go big.
That said, I think he's got a screw loose and has far more balls than skill... although i am not dismissing his skills at all! :)

I get it. I used to catch air all the time on a BMX bike as a kid. Now, I mostly dead sail when I jump due to lack of practice. I'm looking into changing that by adding to my riding some freestyle (read: start doing kid stuff like wheelies and jumps :) )

I used to hear about Sheep Hills in Huntington Beach. It is more of a jump / pump track but it's a start.....

Pick up a copy of Fluidride - Ride like a pro. It will help tons with your jumping skills, among other things such as drops, cornering, braking etc.

OK - here's a question. WHY? What could possibly be the psychology behind going that big and getting that messed up repeatedly? Is it really just the "look ma, no hands" mentality? If there were no YouTube, would people be going this big?
Or is it adrenaline that for some people doesn't pulse on slightly smaller - more makeable stuff? I guess if I have to ask, I'll never understand. I get nervous before racing the sport course at Fontana or "hucking" a 5ft. drop. That's enough adrenaline for me. I know - Art will say "it takes bigger and bigger stuff to get the same adrenaline rush." Try speaking to a crowd of 3300 teenagers, if you want to try something scary.
    End rant...

I think the interest is being good at rough terrain riding.
I have seen Sid Taberlay bunnie hop a cross bike like you would not believe.
I have seen XC racers blow through what looked like a highly technical section.
He may want to put himself in harms way but thats his decision.

In Puming Iron the movie, Arnold is asked about bodybuilding and the reacting of being weird to the public. He responded that he accepted and enjoyed it and found activities of others, such as quarter mile racing, to be strange.

Gravity guys wonder why the heck trail riders climb.

This is an honest request for an interest that will benefit looking into rather than not.
We often regret the things we do NOT do verses the things we do.

As for adrenaline rush.....its great. Anybody that makes it their alpha and omega has a problem. That goes for everything methinks.

Bender is pretty insane. Balls of titanium. That being said; hes a retard. He doesn't land more than half of those and has a crap load of medical issues from falling so much.

I don't have any respect for people who have bigger balls than brains. I'm not knocking free-riding, just Bender a bit. His lights are on but nobody's home. Why on earth would someone repeatedly throw themselves off 55 cliffs and onto concrete like landings and always manage to get hurt?! There's calculated risks and uncalculated risks. Maybe he thinks his risks are calculated but when you fail and get hurt as much as he has, there's nothing calculated or logical about it. More balls than brains does not qualify someone as good, talented or unique, unless you're counting being idiotic and reckless as being heroic or talented. I have a lot more respect for riders like Cedric Gracia and Steve Peat, which in my opinion, have more talent in one finger then Josh has in his whole body.
