You should ride Guadalasca. The encroaching vegetation makes the trail handlebar wide.

Even Backbone, but the trail slaves were hacking at one end yesterday.

The Backbone (Sycamore) tread was destroyed. Braking bumps are worse than ever. More sharp upturned rocks, etc.

How do you volunteer to NOT ruin a trail? Who would listen to an opposing view?

Hmmm, I'm intrigued. I'll need to get out there tomorrow morning before the heat.

Btw, I want to point out that the new bridge on Borrego rocks, I hate that stagnant water crossing. Also the minor trail work filling in the rut up Cattle Pond is great, and all in all Mustard is in really good shape given the scouring it got this wet season. The front half of the Whiting Loop has had excellent trail work!

Hmmm, can't wait ... Something change?

I also got this from the rangers today

"Vicky Malton has been transferred to headquarters this past week and a new senior park ranger has been assigned to Whiting. His name is Everado Mena and he’s scheduled to start this coming week. " Looks like we got a new sheriff in town.

Also that they are going to re-evaluate cactus, and that he thinks the borrego trail cut was an illegal cut....??? hmm.

Well, there's a downed tree cutting off Borrego trail right now. Luckily, you can cut across to the stream bed on the right and get around the tree.

So, im guessing it was rider use and a little bit of rain that worked on cactus :) and not a team of midnight soil compactors?..... however it got done, you are right it is in much better shape.

Also new tree down on serrano :( , and crews are out on berrego. :)

I've heard they can be quite mischievous in the midnight hours, and sometimes even with the setting sun. :-k

I stopped by Whiting Ranch headquarters this morning and introduced myself to Everardo. He seems like a great guy. He and his new assistant Ranger, Shawn (not sure of the spelling..), have spent the last few days acquainting themselves with the park. It sounds like they plan to be out on the trails as often as possible, so make sure to stop and say "Hi" if you see them.

Oh, one more thing, did I mention he's a mountain biker?

Awesome. You know I think I've logged a bit over 100 rides at Whiting since I started last year and I've never seen a Ranger!

Thanks for being our ambassador, kioti.

rode with Mark and while I do see some trail work, it was nothing as bad as other areas I've seen recently. My ride was not diminished in any way. I was more bummed about a cactus missing about 1/2 way down now making it more of a straight line..perhaps somebody ran it over too many times? Anyway...the more folks that ride it the more packed down it should get.

I was scheduled to do some work on Borrego Trail last Saturday, but that project was cancelled due to rain and muddy conditions. However, mud on Borrego meant perfect working conditions on Cactus, and I lobbied for, and got, permission to check it out. This was an opportunity to repair the damage done in July, and I took advantage of it.

Here are photos of some of the work I did. The first shot is halfway down the trail, and the berm had been completely removed. I put it back. Its a little soft, so go easy on it, but it'll compact and firm up through the rainy season. The next 2 shots are an up and down view of a turn sequence nearer the top. The Ranger wants the trail narrow, so I backfilled wide areas along with the banking and berming. I also added and re-established drainage to spill water above and below the turns. The fourth shot is the first turn at the upper end of the trail and shows some of the drainage work. Please keep in mind that the goal is not to create a racetrack, but to fine-tune a multi-use trail used mostly by mountain bikers to be more fun and sustainable.

If you like this type of work, please email or call the Ranger, Everardo Mena, at <[email protected]>, or call at 949-923-2244. Or if you see him, or Sean or Ramiro, out in the park, stop and thank them for supporting mountain biking in Whiting Ranch.
