Just thought I would ask rather than driving around and taking a hit and miss. I had some custom stickers made for my fork and want to cover and protect them before I go riding today. Thanks in advanced.

I bought a 25' x 6" roll from Autozone a couple years back for about $25. I've used it on a lot of bikes and cars, but it's about finished. The stuff works great! I also do the outside of the seat and chainstays for Snow Summit, where the hacks just throw the bike on the lift and the side of the bike swings against the chair frame.

I got some clear plastic tape at ACE hardware. I used it to protect from cable rub, I am sure with would work for stickers.

I've heard people say there is a protective film you can buy at Home Depot, but I don't know what it's called or where it would be found in that massively disorganized store.

Leave it to Ken to find the most expensive tape possible.

Fine!!! Just wrap the crap out of it in SCOTCH tape then..... Ya cheap bastige!;)

The 3m stuff does work awesome on the front edges of the race cars! Does a heck of a job protecting the expensive paint. I usually just cut the rems into the shapes I need to use on bikes.

Hey, whats wrong with scotch tape? No for real Ken, did you have to buy all the prep stuff first, or can you just apply it to a clean frame?

I usually use make sure that the surface being covered is cleaned with no wax residue and then use a mid-temp reducer to make the tape flow over the undulations of the frame/bodywork. You'll end up with a bubble free surface that you would have to look pretty hard to see that it's even covered. On bike frames, I usually only cover the surface that the cable is rubbing on and cut the tape to size just a smidge bigger than the rub mark.

I always clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, then use a heat gun to heat up the surface and the clear tape. After applying the tape, I again go over it with the heat gun.

I use clear shelf liner from Ace Hardware. It isn't nearly as tough as the 3M stuff or helicopter tape, but it's cheap as hell and gets the job done.

It has an opaque finish, so may not be the best solution if you want to see what's underneath clearly. It works great on matte and raw finishes, though, and is a perfect guard against cable rub.

As for application, make a template out of paper first, then simply trace the shape onto your film of choice. You can fine tune the shape before peeling the backing off and applying. Works great.
