    HELMET!

Ive got two crashes on mine and just bought a new one.

The first crash wasnt really a head hit. It did scratch the out side shell, just a glancing blow. My shoulder took most of the hit.

The second crash was saturday. I went OTB, and took a hit to the right temple. Besides scratching up the visor, there was no other sign that the helmet took a hit.

What convinced me to buy a new helmet is that I have a bruise on my cheek bone. Not much, just light blackening, but still a hit taken from inside the helmet.

Would you retire this helmet like I did?

I would have probably retired it on the first hit. Definitely on the second. Used to ride motorsickles and always knew that even dropping the helmet was enough to retire it. You did the right thing.

as far as the helmet goes I would have retired it. A really good piece of advice I was given when I was skeptical if I hit my head crashing, was that if it was a good helmet, you wouldnt know you hit your head. Better safe now than sorry later.

I'm a Troy Lee guy myself, but if you continue to crash on your head this might be the way to go. It can withstand multiple impacts (so they say).

A couple of my friends have this model and love it.

Unless its has a foam designed for multiple impacts I would replace after any heavy impact. Even dropping your helmet can damage it. I have never heard Troy Lee had the right type of foam for multiple impacts, however many say since its DOT helmet it can take extra impacts but there is no evidence of this.

POC uses EPP/SEPP and ProTec uses SXP. Every other company I know of uses EPU or something like that every hit leaves a dent in the foam, which mean less protection in that spot.

The inside of the helmet absorbs the impact so even though the outside shows no damage the helmet is still compromised.

I never said Troy Lee helmets can take multiple hard hits. And not all TL helmets are D.O.T. approved. I did have a TL Air (moto) helmet that I crashed hard on and the inside shell became loose so it was retired.

You probably know more than me since you crash a lot! LOL Kidding Mark, just kidding.....

When it smells like putting your head in a dirty sock.

...also whenever you crash on it.

Oh, man! You have got to try some laundry soap and a shopvac. You wouldn't throw out a good shirt if it smells would you?

Heh... I's jus kiddin bout that.

Some third-party lab eons ago did a thorough test of helmets on the market, and found the foam liners disperse and absorb the first impact, but split and crush to do it, and worse, stay crushed near the unseen outside surface of the foam... when the hard shell springs back from deforming, it leaves an air gap where the foam used to be. So the second impact, there's nothing but air between the hardshell that super-dense foam, which then transfers a ton of force to your skull, and it's that force that makes your skull wallop your brain internally that is the #1 thing the helmet is trying to prevent. After that all the helmet MFGs put in their fine print that helmets should be replaced after any impact.

I'm pretty lax about my helmets.

Yeah, thought as much. EPU and EPS foam helmets are one hit wonders. EPP is a multi hit material that forms back. POC makes em. I'm grabbing one soon as I find them at a decent price.

I AutoX and Road Race a ton. I would A) Ditch the helmet upon first impact or B)When the rating has expired. IE: SNELL or M ratings.
