I have always referred to myself as a mountain biker in conversation, I own my 2nd road bike and bought my garmin back in August. I decided to use different folders and after reviewing my miles I couldn't believe the percentage breakdown.:?:

In closing, I don't own any road jerseys and my shimano MTB shoes are just fine.

Mtb miles don't really translate to roadie miles. Don't worry, your heart is still in the dirt

    Nevermind the flat stuff.
Do you think MTB wins on climbing stats?

Look at time spent. I equate 1 mile of mountain to 3 of road.

I started Mountain biking in 1995. And then I saw the 1997 Tour... Ever since then my heart has been split in two

Was taken in by the road bike magic at age 5.

Discovered the trail magic the next year.

On Any Sunday Came out a few years later and I was hopelessly brainwashed.

The only time I've took to the road since was for school, work, or errands for Mom.

OK, I lie, on a few vacations now and then to get around instead of a car.

The roads are too dangerous here in SoCal.

The day I got my first road bike in Nov 08.

Built up my endurance in ways mountain biking never could.

My Road Bug bit me the second I bought my road bike. Getting out and riding my road bike is so much EASIER than packing up my mountain bike, going for a drive, unloading it, riding it, loading it back up, driving home, and unloading it...

Riding rode also gives you a since of accomplishment since to me it's all about the pain and pushing beyond what you would normally do. On the mountain bike though it's just pure joy to me. Both have their places, I think one is for health and fitness (road) and the other is for fun and excitement (mtn)

I'm a roadie turning mountain biker and I think you nailed it for me. I'm stoked. TOTALLY stoked...anytime I get out on the dirt. I could be suffering, but still, I'm just so glad to be there. I don't always feel that on the road, I'll admit I was overtraining for awhile and the fun was sucked out of it for me. It was one of the major reasons I turned to the dirt. I needed to have fun and love the bike again.

I was constructing my first bike in the Womb . I was always the child playing in the kid playing in the dirt, then one day I was able to ride in the dirt. I was was fine with only mountain biking, until one day someone zoomed past me on a road bike while I was driving down a street. I said, "wow, I didn't know a person can go so fast on one of those", I grinned and... now I'm on my second road bike. HAHA. I love riding both mountain and road equally, but I do spend more hours on the road bike.

I think dirt brings the "I feel like an 8 year old" factor back to cycling, of any discipline.

I got a road bike as a training device for mountain bike racing. Figured I can hit the road pretty much every day and mountain bike on weekends. This was in February 2008.

Yes, its much much easier logistically to ride a road bike as I can just tak it out of the house and ride anywhere I choose. Don;t need to pack the bike and the equipement, drive to a trailhead, and then when I come back I don;t need to wash the bike, the gear etc etc. Riding a road bike is simply a heck of alot easier to put together.

Well I started riding the road for training purposes and now I've moved on to looking at primarily road racing. Truth is I haven't been on my mountain bike since last October.

I'm coming back though. Miss the mountain bike and where it can take me, so I'll get back on the MTB and prep for the US Cup MTB series races.

The beauty of it all is that before I would just consider myself a mountain biker and sometimes even frown upon roadies in the typical baggy vs lycra nonsensical debate. Believe I've now grown up into exactly the type of cyclist I want to be, and that is a "cyclist". I'm not a mountain biker or a roadie. Just a cyclist to whom getting a leg over a top tube and pedaling away is more imporant that the surface I pedal on or the width of my tires.

Just like Vlad, I got a road bike to supplement my MTB race training. Much easier to hold HR and power zones on the road than on the MTB. Then a wierd thing happened. I got addicted to the speed of road riding. Nothing better than zipping through a 50 mile ride at 25 mph.

If I had to guess, I'd say my percentage is close to 70/30 road to MTB. I didn't actually ride the MTB this weekend, but put in a 75 mile road ride on Saturday and followed it up with a 50 miler up the Cajon Pass on Sunday.

The scary part is that I really don't own any baggies anymore. Maybe 2-3 pairs of shorts and a few older jerseys. 95% of everything I have now is either a zip road jersey or bibs.

My poor race MTB looks so lonely...

    Exactly.

I definitely love the convenience of road and I need it to keep my fitness progressing. There's a place for both.

Besides...I have too many pretty road bikes to abandon it altogether...lol!

I still can't get used to lycra. It doesn't look right on me. I wear my mtb gear on my SS roadie. But i'm pondering the tights.

Greg - you got to share the love and ride the other lady once in a while!

The beauty is that after a long period of road riding, when you get back on the MTB, the gearing seems so easy that you are flying on the MTB.

    See you at the races!
