I'm using dmr vaults with vans originals and don't have a problem. I also use my running shoes from time to time too and it's ok.

I'm using discounted $35 Jester Royal skater shoes from Big5 and pedals with big pegs. the shoes hold on like velcro. I used to run clipless but got tired of trying to re-clip in if i had to put a foot down... by no means am i against them meow, just not my cup of tea for dh'ing! if i get get an all.mt bike i'll be rocking them for uphill stuff.

My current combo is the Shimano DX-647 pedals with 5.10 Minaar shoes. They works fantastically, and the shoes can be used on flat pedals, and are very comfy to walk around (or hike-a-bike) in.

I also wouldn't hesitate to be using some XT or XTR trail pedals. I've ridden them on demo bikes using my 5.10's and they feel exactly the same as the 647's, but at a lot less weight.

Also, fwiw, shimano SPD pedals are some of the most durable bike parts I've ever used, and my Minaars are wearing great, even though I spend a good amount of time just walking around in them. The amount of (large) rocks that both have been crammed into during my adventures have done nothing to phase either.

I've been using the Shimano DX's cheaper and lighter brother (PD-M424) for over 10 years with out a hitch.

And just started wearing the Sette' Nix shoe which is really comfortable and really cheap.

Shimano DX work great, I feel like I have more control with these than with my flats. I have also never had a problem getting unclipped when I had to.

If you guys are looking for shoes specifically 5 10's there's a 5 10 warehouse in Redlands Corner of Alabama and State st. called UNDERGROUND it's open every Friday from 1-5 pm only and if you can make it at opening time you'll be able to get some of the sample they're brand new shoes only samples that they show to the vendors for only $29 but if that does't work for you they plenty of choices and average prices hover around $89.

When you indicate DH/Freeride I'm assuming you are also riding a DH rig not a AM/Xcountry rig. Correct? I had a set of CB Mallet 3s and they are well built light weight for platforms and have titanium to save weight very good reviews for DH use. You also can use them soley as platforms without using clips. I also really like the CB Candy 3s smaller platform but very reliable for AM/Xcountry use clipping in and out in hairy sections is why currently run these on both my bikes.

Thanks for your help guys, rscroeder is letting me try the shimano m545 pedals....just installed them and with my xc style shimano shoe they feel pretty good. I can feel the platform under them. Cant wait to try them out.

Question: if i went with more of a flatter soled dh/freeride shoe would the sole contact the pedal body more by any chance?

yeah they will. Not sure about the pedals your talking about do have pins but for the clipless dh pedals with pins you can adjust the amount the pins are out to make more or less contact with the shoes your running. Teva just partnered with cb to make a dh shoe clipless to work with the mallet more but I think they will suit any pedals. It would just be more contact.

I run the same setup when I ride clipped in...I do have some shoe/pedal interference that needs to be worked out, but all in all this is a great setup.

I have Specialized flats with 5-10 shoes and they grip as well as clipped. I used to have the Shimano DX and really liked them too. I just feel good with the flats on technical stuff, the 5-10 really grip on the pedal.

On my 29er I still have Shimano clips, I do a lot more out-of-the-saddle climbing, it is my training bike, this is why I prefer the clipped pedals on this one.
