If cars want the same rights as bikes on the road, they need to follow the same laws. Stop signs, red lights, right of way, 3 foot distance when overtaking, speed limits, signaling for turns and lane changes, improper horn usage, overcoming the urge to throw objects at people not in cars, etc... you can't have it both ways.

Until car drivers stop breaking traffic laws constantly, this line of "reasoning" is really pointless.

When a bike is taking up the "entire lane," dude has a right to do so. It's a courtesy to be riding the shoulder and leave the slow lane for the car unless there is a bike lane. Like I said, same thing as any vehicle.

He should have just written it under the pseudo name "Patrick Bateman".
Must admit though that I used to live in down town LA and a lot of cyclists on the road did ride like complete morons with no apparent knowledge of the rules of the road (as do a hell of a lot of car drivers too). This guy just seems to have that same stupid, selfish mentality.

He's either trolling for reader responses (good job!) or to borrow from the Big Lebowski, "...a Fu*&%$g Dunce".

http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/ last Friday's entry has a quick blurb about Zac's wisdom.

Zac is just playing. He can't actually be that dumb. I think he's just trying to get a rise out of us. Of course it worked...

Plenty of other people feel this way...

and we should ride accordingly. I agree that we are lucky that this guy said what plenty of drivers feel. While roadies do have rights on the road, it doesn't do us much good when your head is cracked open and you're all busted up. We have more to lose than anyone driving. I'm not saying stick to the sidewalks, but maybe be a bit more cautious when you're in that turn lane. Rather than make your point and let the vehicle know you have your rights as a cyclist, be more cautious and let the driver get his.

    Speaking as a lifelong motorcyclist as well as a fairly recent road biking convert;

Car drivers are, by and large, complete ****ing idiots.

I mean seriously, look at the latest Volvo adverts, the latest "safety features" are there to take into account the fact that the driver isn't PAYING ****ING ATTENTION.

Automatic braking? Blind spot alarms? Seriously? How ****ing retarded do you have to be to not look where you're going or look over your shoulder to change lanes?

Christ, if the car is having to make up for the driver's shortcomings, it's a fair indicator that the driver needs to have their license revoked.

You folks can keep harping about roadies not obeying the laws (I take it you weren't speeding at all today, huh?) but I've rode the road for many years and for the most part, the majority of us do obey the laws. Moreso then the vehicles we are constantly avoiding. It's amazing how many cars do the California stop (slow roll through the stop sign) and not to much is mentioned. But let a roadie do it and everyone gets up in arms about the lawless roadies! How about mountain bikers in some of the city/county parks, are they obeying the 15 mph speed limit? Don't make me laugh, even a rookie doesn't adhere to this one.

Well I wasn't speeding, but then I was riding PCH and haven't quite reached the point of maintaining 55mph on my Fenix :D

.. here's the thing though, if a roadie runs a stop sign and hits a car, the roadie gets hurt, if a car runs a stop sign and hits a roadie, the ROADIE gets hurt.

The consequences of ****ing up when you're driving a car far outweigh the consequences of ****ing up when you're riding a bicycle, the idea that if bicyclists don't obey traffic laws that it's ok for car drivers to disobey traffic laws is complete nonsense - it's like applying the same standard to water pistols as to actual firearms.

Don't look at me, that's the only reason I'm here too :)

The accent works, doesn't it? ;)

    He really doesn't.

I'm a serious Clydesdale (I played football in college, no, not the nancy boy soccer; football, I was an offensive lineman :)), do I have the right to stomp around telling non Clydes to get the hell out of my way just because I can swat them like flies? :)

Seriously, he's a pussy without his car, if he honestly thinks that just because he has the ability to hurt other people that somehow it's his right, I actually look forward to the day I meet him in a dark alley ;)
