Doing my first VQ saturday after 4 back surgeries over the years...feel very lucky and my goal is to beat the cutoff times. Anyway, my wife and our two boys want to meet me at the bottom of Motorway at the first aid station for moral support. My question for those who've done the race, is there any possibility that they will be able to park along Silverado cyn road or is it so crowded that that will be impossible? I won't have time to stop for long but my 5 year old is fired up to lube my chain and I'm hoping he gets to. Thanks and good luck to all who are racing Sat.
You can park along the road or even go into Maple Springs since the gate is open. Keep in mind that there will be plenty of others doing the same so get there early. There will be people there to direct you where to park as to not block the area needed for the aid station setup.
My wife has done the same thing the last 2 years. People are coming and going as their riders pass so spots open up. Good luck and save some energy for the last hill.
I called CNF Trabuco RD today and they said the Maple Springs gate was closed. Is it really? Hope it's opened on Friday.
We don't.....we hope it stays closed on Saturday. It is so much nicer riding up Maple Springs when you know there are no idiots out there trying to win the World Rally Championship or the Baja 500. And don't forget that with as dry as it has been, constantly getting dusted out by every vehicle or moto that goes by.
The worst are the diesel pickup trucks or the 2-stroke bikes. When you're over 2 hours of hard riding in, particularly in race-exertion, everything is sensitive, especially your nose/lungs. The smell of those vehicles passing feels like I'm inhaling death for 15-30 seconds.
Gene - you should know better than to trust CNF webpage, it's usually months old. Open gate would be better for responsible spectators. Closed is better for riders. I'm just constantly annoyed at how much gates are closed in CNF. I think they like keeping people out. CNF Trabuco RD phone doesn't answer today.
Well the last several status's were correct and matched what was posted at the Ranger station on Silverado, most recent after the rain storm that knock trees down on Maple Springs. I guess you can drive all the way in if you don't trust either the website or the sign. 3 hrs ago when I checked it showed "closed" and after they "updated" again today:
