Thanks for the updates. The attitudes of everyone I met on the trail was definitely a welcome surprise. Oddly enough, I came across two riders who were cramping hard but still in good spirits.

As I told some fellow "also rans" on Blackstar, we make the top finishers look good.

    next year...

So i finished in 7:23, which would have been a respectable time for my first CC. Except I didn't sign up for CC, i signed up for VQ, and found out I bit off a little more than I could chew...
Friday night I did something that i had never done before for any long ride - prepared ahead of time! Everything was packed in the 4runner, bike was lubed, tightened, ready to go. Made a good dinner, and got myself to bed by 9:30. Was up at 3:30, took a shower to loosen up, and made it to Blackstar by 4:30ish, right about the same time as vickie - we both scored some of those few spots waaaaay up by the starting line!
Start went off well - didn't get too jostled or bumped around, and really made a point of settling in my own rhythm for climbing blackstar. Last year's Traverse i got sucked into too quick of a pace, and it killed me later on.
Was feeling great at Beeks, sucked back a gu and kept going, heading off into the mist that hung on MD pretty much all day. Climbs up to motorway flew by, though in the fog i couln't really see them anyway. Said hi to OMR, popped another gel, then off into the unknown down motorway, which turned out to be fun, if a little loose and rocky. Got a little twinge at the bottom, but it went away quick...thankfully!
Shot down some blocks at Aid#1 and refilled, said hi to andy and heather, then onward to my imminent demise. I missed the traiing ride a couple weeks ago, so up to moment i started out of AS1 i'd never even seen Maple Springs. It felt ok i guess, but just sucked all the life out of my legs. Got to 4 corners and started realizing that i wasn't going to make the cutoff unless i suddenly turned into mario. Thanks for the encouragement though jose - it helped keep me going!
Grunted and ground my way up to the peak at 11:30-ish, so i knew my race was done at that point, and just enjoyed the descent down UHJ and LHJ!
Learned a lot doing this. No. 1 was a bit of humility - i definitely bit off more than i could chew trying to do vq my first time out. Probably would have been better suited doing cc, but oh well. My nutrition worked really well for me though - no big cramping problems or dehydration, so i learned something from my traverse travails last year! Getting sick and missing out on training hurt me more than i thought - the endurance was there, but my pace wasn't. Nice thing is, i know where i need to cut time for the cutoffs next year!
Great job everyone that came out saturday, cc, vq, and volunteers - the enthusiam and comraderie were amazing. And everyone that rode saturday, i'm impressed as hell at all of you! And sam, i owe you a beer any time...

Proud as i've ever been with a DNF!

There is a common misconception with DNF; it's actually short for "did nothing fatal."

I got a cramp just reading the ride reports - and the thought of doing either route on a SS makes my knees burn. Cheers to all who went out; it makes some of us mortals think we could push ourselves a bit harder...

Famous...? Well, I don't know about that :-k but thank you!!!

I about fell out of my chair when I read this section of your post -

Serioulsy, once I came out from the Trail Head, I was on a mission......but, you captured it SO well.

I did have one fear though.....those pot holes that were the size of moon craters....I swear I saw my life flash in front of me when I hit a few....I've never been down that road as fast as we did it Saturday. Thanks for the chase, and the good times....I'm glad I could help take the HELL out of Trabuco Road and make it somewhat memorable, or as you put it exhilerating for you.

    Until the next time.....

Congratulations to all who did this ride. DNF or no DNF; it's all the same to me. Just the attempt is admirable enough, IMO. I can't even fathom the thought of such a long ride. Kudos to all who did CC and VQ. Even you, Ronnie. Believe it or not, I'm proud of you too, big guy!

The pic of the man Mann says it all. He looks so agonized and relieved it's finally over.

I usually blame the "lack of oxygen" we have at the finish.... :-k
Or the fact that after expending 4000+ calories and having nothing but Gu, Cytomax, Electrolites, Bars, blocks and what ever we all eat at these events - and letting that first beer go to our heads...

Too funny, that was me!!! I think you also said at least it didn't come from the other end. I said, "Do what you gotta do to be comfortable." That's racing! I already told myself if it comes down to peeing in my shorts in order to make the final cut-off for VQ, that's what I'm doing! Last year I missed the final cut off and cried like a baby. This year, I made it to WHT with plenty of time to drop my drawers. :-$

You trained half as much this year, compared to last and you got FASTER! You can fall in sh*t, come out smelling and looking like the most magnificent prize rose, you beautiful little feather ho!!! I'm so proud of you. Seems I'm always about a year behind you, not to mention, I've been riding for twice as long. What's it gonna take to get as fast as you?!

    You were born to ride!

So . . . when are we celebrating?

Anyone else find they cant walk today? I had MAJOR difficulty getting off the bed this morning and took about 5minutes to navigate my way down the 3 flights of stairs like an old cripple. I dont recall EVER straining muscles like this.

I was far worse yesterday. Today I walked a few blocks to get to breakfast for a work thing and walked back. My right shoulder is probably what hurts the most, aside from bruises from my 3 crashes.

I think we're gonna spin on our trainer a bit tonight, hopefully everything will losen up and get oiled again. I'm missing the gym!

Tim, I know how you feel, I had the same thing happen to me last year! It was my first VQ and I had NO IDEA about training or exactly how bad it was gonna hurt. They took my number at the bottom of HJ and I was inconsolable. This year, I gave up precious time with my friends and family, and worked twice as hard. I did the final training ride up to the peaks 2 weeks prior to the race and came down with a nasty chest cold that night.

This year, I knew how hard it was and still was unsure of the outcome. But, with all the experience from last year and my much better preparation this year, it made a world of difference. Plus, my mission was from the heart; to make it for my beloved fallen angel, Christy Kirkwood. Even though I swore I wouldn't do it again, time went by, the memory of the pain subsided and I realized I did not want my quest to end that way. I wanted to make myself, my family and friends proud.

If decide to try again, just know, you must want it so badly you are willing to do W.E.I.T. (Whatever it takes!) As far as training goes, it's only fun when yer done. Train with people who have made it, and ask a lot of questions about training, nutrition, etc. Everyone has their own purpose for the quest. You are strong enough to do it for sure! Congratulations on having the cahonas even sign up and I hope you will give it another try next year. See you on the trails!;)

p.s. anyone who wants to read all the details...I've posted a long entry on my blog...

Did you say $1k prize? ;)

My leg still hurts above the knee (left inner quad). Was very stiff this morning. Lower back and neck sore but not too bad. Triceps are wrecked!

I want to go walk on the treadmill tonight or spin on the stationary bike but damn...I feel like resting, too!

Deb, I admire your fortitude and I think your mission was beautiful. Congratulations :)

I was pretty sore yesterday but today is worse (not sure why that would be??) I might do some walking round the lake tonight but its tempting to curl up in a ball with a few Sierra's until the aching goes away :)
Main area of pain is the bit jsut above my knees on both sides and the tendons down the back of my knee.
