Yeah. You take a left through the gate just before you reach the towers.

Wait....just read your post again. As you reach the top of Skyline to head towards Beeks, there is a right you take. It's before that last bit of climbing before the little down to Beeks. I don't remember if there is a gate there or not, but you should see bike tracks that go that way. That will take you to Sierra Peak. You stay on that road until just before Sierra Peak where you hang a left through the gate to descend down Coal Canyon.
