Ust/Tubeless Tires Help/Advise(merged/sticky)

I plan on purchasing a set of Kenda Tomac Nevegal DTC/ UST Tire 2.35 ($43.95) for front and rear.

Planing on mounting the tires on non-UST rims: Mavic Crossride wheelset with Stan's No Tubes Cyclocross System.

Any suggestions, feedback, recommendation or experience with this combination would be highly appreciated.

I know you can use non UST tires on UST rims, but not sure it works the way you want to do it. UST rims come with a valve stem that screws into the rim in place of the tubes valve stem. UST rims also have a grove where the beads sets in. Why spend the money on UST tires when you can just go with a regular one?

The Stan's No Tubes Cyclocross System is designed to convert your non - ust rim to ust rim, it includes valve stem , tape, etc.... My concern is the fit on the tire to rim, compatibility and a tight fit.

Too many flats... I have a tenancy to wander off the trail.

OK, I have UST rims and just use Stans, no rim tape needed. The tire will fit as it does with non UST tires to UST rims. The biggest problem is setting the bead on the UST rim. I don't think you'll have that same issue since non UST rims don't have that grove the bead sets in. Using a compressor helps to fill the tire quickly. You'll need to pick up an schader adapter so you can use the reg compressor.

Im not really sure about non UST rims to UST tires. Ive done the Stans thing using non UST rims to non UST tires and I love it! Like genusmtnbkr5 said, why even bother with the UST tires? :?:

Yes UST tires generally have A higher Thread count Per Inch (TPI) but some non USD tires work ok also if set up properly.

Many tires bleed for a little while run with stans. I have seen Specialized and Kenda tires bleed.

Any reason for using the Cyclocross kit? It'll be a loose fit, as that's made for a 700c wheel.

Using UST tires on non-UST rims is a waste of money and extra weight. Stans strips do not make the rim UST. Just use non-UST tires with the converted set-up. Warning, as mentioned by others, Kenda tires can be a PITA to convert.

I've been running UST Nevegals with Stan's strips on Azonic Outlaws for a couple of months now. I originally mounted them with no Stan's fluid and they lost 1-2 psi a week. The UST tires seem to take alot of abuse.

I'm running that exact tire in the front with Stan's wheel strips. Works perfectly. I tried a non ust 2.35 Nevegal, but the tire kept leaking right at the bead where those little ridges are, even with Stan's fluid. The ust tire goes right on, fills with air no problem, and doesn't leak. Yes, its heavier than a non ust tire, but the sidewalls are beefy, and there is no maintenance to do.

I'm running UST tires on some ghetto converted Outlaws and they have been flawless. The UST tires are heavier, but they don't leak air at all, so you don't have to keep adding air and checking to make sure you still have sealant in them. I've used non-UST tires as well and they worked very well as well, so I don't think you can really go wrong either way.

My question is the opposite of the OP.

What do you guys recommend for a Mavic 819? Can I run a regular 2.35 nevegal with Stans using the valves that came with the 819s? Or should I buy the UST nevagals?

I bought the rims 2 months ago and have been waiting to go tubeless after my current tires wear out. The added weight of the UST nevegals has kept me from jumping right away but I get a lot of pinch flats so I am ready.

I decided to go with the Maxxis High Roller UST 2.35 60a Tire in instead of the Kenda Tomac Nevegal DTC/ UST Tire 2.35. I heard this was a better tire. Got a good price at JensonUSA out of Corona, $51.99 Each, price Match.

I hope they preform better than the Maxxis Ignitor 2.35 Lust UST's did for me. I did not care for those at all. The are a very unpredictable tire. I rode on them once at La Tuna and took them off in favor of 2.35 Nevegal UST's or the Schwalbe Big Betty 2.4 & 2.35 Fat Albert UST combo. Both are far superior in dry and loose conditions IMO. I strictly run UST wheels FWIW.

BTW, anyone care to buy a pair of Maxxis Ignitor 2.35 Lust UST's? Paid $80, used once for 10 miles. Will sell the pair for $50. You may like them.

Your valves are fine..

Regular Nevegals can be problematic with stans and I would stay away from that set-up.

The UST Nevegals sound like a good way to go but will be heavy.

I have had great luck converting WTB and Schwalbe tires with my 819's.-

Piranha, when did you convert to Schwalbes from Nevegals? I swear, you are starting to sound like me about those tires. Or, maybe, just maybe... for the San Gabes, they're really that good and deserve the praise. :-k Stiill waiting for a Big Betty 2.35 in a 29'er, it will be worth the price.
