RR: Urban Assault (aka I am one bad a$$ mofo curb hucker)
Well as some of you know I broke my ankle while mtn biking coming up on 12 weeks ago. Today was my first day back on the bike. Spent 8 weeks rocking cast and crutches and last 3+ doing rehab. While rehab is still going on and will continue for weeks ahead my thought is if I can ride a stationary bike in rehab why not take my rig for a spin on the road.
Sitting here typing I still cannot stop smiling. Physical BS aside the hardest part is not doing what you love. Even as my riding has dwindled over the years with continued family and work responsibilities, getting out and ripping it up on the dirt with good friends keeps me going.
Anyway here goes my ride report…
Yep, decided today is the day to ride. Swap my Speedplay Frogs for Kona Flats in hopes of placing less stress on ankle, squeeze into baggies after gaining too much weight not riding for last 3 months. While it "may have" have been suggested to hold of any riding for a few more weeks by surgeon/PT (and trail riding even longer) I headed out accepting the fact that I will be confined to ride the local streets. As always while riding to the local trailheads, after some riding in the street I cruise onto side walk and decide to "huck my first curb". I quickly realize that for me clipless pedals and more importantly an ankle with some actual strength helps quite a bit when jumping, bunny hopping or mashing. Landing a bit sketch but no pain question now becomes should I seek more/hit more? I think you can guess the answer.
Other ride highlights include almost getting hit by a car as I didn’t have the "power" to ride hard crossing street ahead of car and even got "chased" by a dog (how cliché, huh). Anyway, while probably one of the least "spectacular" rides to report (not long, fast,or steep and hitting curbs ain't sh!te), having personally been off bike for so long this one will go down as one of my favorite in a while and may have been what the doctor did not order. Look our B-star it been a while but you're in my sights
Ride Stats
Mileage : 12.4
Accent/decent +392/-392 (hahahaha-not exactly SoCal riding)
Number of curb hucks/bunny hops: I'm not telling
Smiles: One that lasted the entire ride:bang:
Attempting to meet the high standards set forth by STR in ride reports I am including pics
GPS of ride, new pedals and my trusted stead. Maybe it's just me but I think i may have actually picked up some dirt on the ride as well 8)
and for the record - this is not, nor does it make me a roadie!
